Today's schedule ...

  • 10 a.m. Practice
  • 12 p.m. Coach Malzahn, Selected Players (Specialists)
  • 6 p.m. Practice (No Media Availability Post-Practice)

Ok ... now onto Malzahn's mid-day presser ...

Gus Malzahn: Felt like they had "a really good practice" this morning and "they rose to the occasion" after they started out lethargic.

...

Malzahn said three walk-ons were awarded scholarships: Blake Poole, Chandler Shakespere and Dimitri Reese.

...

Malzahn said that Dee Ford didn't practice today. Wouldn't give out specifics of injury.

...

On whether Ford would miss the first game: "I would definitely hope not."

...

Jason Dufner was at practice this morning. Malzahn said he came in to talk about the team about "mental toughness." Said it "was an honor."

Malzahn confirmed that there will be a scrimmage on Saturday. "We got a lot of stuff figured out now."

Safety Demetruce McNeal practiced, while star Justin Garrett was on the field but did not participate, according to Malzahn

Malzahn: "What he did this last weekend was really unbelievable. ... We're definitely big fans of Jason Dufner."

Malzahn asked if any freshmen can play first game: "There's quite a few of them who we feel have a good chance." That was helpful.

Malzahn said today that although QB race could go to Monday, the Quarterback could be named as early as tomorrow.

Hopefully after saturday scrimmage the starting lineup will be ironed out and they can start to gel as a unit.

Sounds like Malzahn is tight lipped on everything but I can understand his reasoning. At least he lets us know when players are performing up to his standards.

Im glad he at least said "any time before Monday" on the Qb battle. Heck at least the guessing game has its limits now. Haha. WDE everybody!

Sounds like he is dotting his i's and crossing his t's. leads me to believe its going to be Marshall. Can't wait. Maybe we'll be able to see some video of the starter in action from Saturdays scrimmage? Maybe? Please?

I believe it is Marshall as well but I think it's great that JJ is pushing him. I just have this feeling that they both turned out to be really good. I say that because to me it didn't seem to take long to rule the existing QB's out.

Agreed...i think this weeks competition is seeing if they need to redshirt Johnson or not

From what I am told that decision may not be made until into the season.

And that makes perfect sense. We may need him THIS YEAR but if Marshalls gets it done we wont
