Before I came back to Tulane for my last semester, I was reminiscing about all the good times I had, and decided to come up with a list of "must do" things that I would recommend that my friends and classmates partake in before they left the city. Now, obviously those of you who are just coming into town for the Sugar Bowl can't possibly accomplish all of these (heck, it took me 4 years to fit them all in), but maybe they'll give you some ideas of things you might like to try during your trip here or even reason to come back for a later trip. :) So without further ado...

Ok.

No one has mentioned it yet. Jacques-imo's Cafe. Oak Street next to Maple Leaf Bar (great bar) is the best place to eat. Look it up on NOLA.com.

It is my favorite restaurant there. You can get a reservation if you have 5 or more in your party. Also you can wait at the Maple Leaf and they will come and get you when your table is ready.

As for the restaurant, there is a table in the alley between two buildings, they have tables in the sidewalk and a table in the back of pickup truck out front. It is a very fun atmosphere, great, great, great food. Tons of entry's. It may sound a little trashy, its not. You will see people in suits waiting to get a table next to someone in jeans. Great seafood and new orleans dishes. you will not be disappointed. Sometimes the wait is long, but its enjoyable at the Maple Leaf. One time I waited for an hour and half with my date, and we didn't care because we had such a good time at the bar.

As for other places:

Burgers: Port of Call---simply the best burger. period.

Bar: Ms. Mae's. The cheapest liquor anywhere in the world. Crown or any other top shelf liquor is like $2.00 or $2.25 a drink. Beer is real cheap. Real interesting place, college people, business suits, low-lifes, bums, average joes, and strange people all in the same bar. Corner of Napoleon and Magazine. A few blocks from Tipitina's. Right next to Casamento's (great Oyster place...some say better than Acme). If you are going to Tips that night for a show, get your tickets at Tips early...then drive up Napoleon to Ms. Maes. The drinks are alot cheaper and then you can go back to Tips and spend your money on the same drink but at twice the price. Tips is the best place to see live music.

Po-Boys: Domilises (spelling?) can't tell you where it is exactly: try Nola.com- in the middle of neighborhood uptown, went there a thousand times but only know how to drive there don't know streets-- about three/four blocks towards the quarter from Jefferson and towards the river from Magazine. Awesome poboys...best in town...small place. Usually a line at lunch time.

Bars: Don't go to F&Ms until after 2 am....if girls are not dancing on the pool table, you are there too early. There is also a bar next door (college kids mostly)...called Grits.

Bar Scene: If you are tired of Bourbon Street...try Frenchmen...a little different scene with a lot of bars and restaurants. A few of them have been mentioned above.

Another cool bar for younger college kids to young adult crowd is the Bridge Lounge on Magazine near the interstate. Cool place...lots of shall we say "talent" walking around.

Columns Hotel: mentioned above...great place. great atmosphere...you can be about any age and enjoy yourself there.

Great list. I like "Drive 30MPH down the spiral ramp in the Canal Place parking garage" that is like a death wish. I have driven down that thing so many times, I get dizzy everytime.

I think I have done most of your list, some I would take off, somethings I would add. but its funny how everyone's list is would be very close.

I've scared many-a-person by coming down that thing fast and then running up on a slow moving automobile in front of me. It's fun for the whole family!

Also from your list:

1. Can't beat the Frostop.

2. I think most of our glasses at our house were from the Bulldog.

Also, a few I think you should add:

1. Have a Burger and a Monsoon for lunch at Port of Call. Then buy another monsoon to go when you leave.

2. Play Ms. Pacman at Ms. Mae's or play pool against one of the "regulars"

3. French-Fry Po-Boy from Verti Mart.

4. Walk from Uptown (at least from Napoleon) all the way to the French Quarter during Mardi Gras.

5. All-you-can-eat Red Beans and Rice and Fried Chicken at Dunbar's.

My last Sugar Bowl was Alabama vs. Miami several years ago. New Years eve had apparently been a bit of a party. I still remember the smell of puke and urine on Bourbon Street. Saw Howell Heflin barhopping in the middle of the afternoon with an entourage. He was definitely ready to party by game time.

Miami won (and I had just moved from Miami to Birmingham at the time, so I had an excuse to root for them even though an Alabama fan gave me my tickets) and I had fun walking around after the game, spotting friends from Birmingham who were drinking heavily and cussing about the loss. Oh, what a memorable trip.

Streetcars

I love to get on the streetcars on St. Charles and ride to the end of the line; then get back on and ride back to town. The ride through the Garden District is absolutely fabulous. Try mid to late morning when its no so crowded. Also, if you are staying at the Hilton or want to go to Harrahs, catch the streetcar from the Quarter...it's only a buck and will take you about two minutes.

Unknown eating places

There is a small restaurant a block or two off of Bourbon. It's called the Nawlins Eatery (I think its Eatery...I'm sure about the word Nawlins). They have the best shrimp omelet. Great place for brunch.

Best eating place

Hands down...Ralph and Cacoo's. If you get a seafood entree (and you're crazy if you don't), ask them to top it with crawfish etoufee. Absolutely delicious!!!!

Best Meal After Sugar Bowl Hands Down:

Ham and Cheese omelet at Camelia Grill. It was one of the only places open outside the Quarter.

Also, get a muffeletta from Central Grocery, they are the BEST.

JetaTek,

What about parking for the Sugar Bowl? I will be coming in from Mobile on I-10. Where would be the best place to park to get to the Dome? I will check out the restaurant list. I need a freaking map of NOLA!! Never been there!!! Any help would be appreciated!!!

Dude, a trip to NO and you suggest a chain restaurant? C'mon, there are tons of great places to eat that you can't find anywhere outside of LA.

There are lots of parking garages next to the Superdome. For special events, nearly all of the garages and lots will charge $15 or $20 for parking. Sometimes if you're extraordinarily lucky you can find parallel parking on one of the side streets, but don't bank on it.

There's a garage right across from the Dome on O'Keefe Ave. that I usually park at for the Saints games. It's $15, and usually it only takes about 5 minutes to get out of after the game. If you don't mind sitting in traffic for a little while after the game lets out, then I'd say just park at the Macy's parking garage right beside the Dome. It's $20, but you're literally right there.
