Sounds like a reasonable standard to me.

It is.  But it's a rather low bar.

She could have gone after a firebrand; someone that would bring a lot of passion and energy to the ticket like Warren.  She wanted "safe."  No unforced errors.

Not to mention - two of the top "firebrands" that they looked at (Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown) both are from states with Republican governors - which means that those governors get to pick their replacement until the next election, and they would most likely pick fellow Republicans. That's hardly a smart move if you're trying to flip the Senate to Democrat control.

Strategically, it appears a solid pick.

“Clinton-Kaine: the safe choice” isn’t a bad message in a race with Donald Trump

She also wanted a governing partner. Kaine has at least some hope of working with his Republican colleagues in the Senate.

A low bar, perhaps.  But still seems like very few candidates/politicians of recent years make it! :-\

Also, as VP, he'll preside over the Senate, which hopefully will help him in building a moderate coalition on the floor that can actually work.  He already has a track record of being able to work with both sides of the aisle.
