ellitor 33,135
Quote Ja'Varrius Johnson dishes on his recruitment and more By Keith Niebuhr Ja'Varrius Johnson is playing like someone who doesn’t like his 3-star rating. The Auburn commit from Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) entered last Friday's nationally televised game with Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson as the state's leader in total receiving yardage so it was little surprise that he was dominant -- again — that evening. In a 63-49 loss, Johnson recorded nine catches for 232 yards and added a 99-yard kickoff return for six. For keeping track, he now has 70 receptions for 1,464 yards (with a long of 77 yards) and 11 touchdowns. That’s a stellar average of 20.9 yards per reception. Johnson has six 100-yard receiving games and two over 200 this year. He just might be entering the conversation for state player-of-the-year honors. In addition to his ridiculous receiving numbers, he has two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Auburn Undercover caught up with Johnson to talk stats, his recruitment and more … AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You had something like 70 catches last season at St. Clair County (Ala.) so why do you think you kind of flew under the recruiting radar for so long? JOHNSON: I just feel like I was in a position and at a school where not that many people knew about me. That’s not a big school. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: As good as your stats were last year they’re even better now. Are you much of a stats guy? How impressed are you with your numbers? JOHNSON: Honestly, I don’t really think about it. I just go out and play. They should be high. I’ve had good numbers each game. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Is there one performance of yours this season that stands out; one you think was your best? JOHNSON: I’d probably say the Thompson game is the best one I’ve played. They were a really good team. Really good linebackers and defense. Just an all-around good team. I went out on ESPN and showed I could do it. I went out and got over 200 yards. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You also had a good game on ESPN earlier this season against Cedar Grove (Ga.). No nerves playing before that big television audience? JOHNSON: No sir. I love it. I love the game. I don’t get nervous playing the game. I just show what I can do and have fun playing. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: With you playing so well, do you think new offers could come? JOHNSON: I’ve been visiting Bama with my teammates a lot. I’m not sure if they’ll offer me or not but they’re looking at me. They say they like how I look on film and what I bring to the table and things like that. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: I think this is the question every Auburn fan wants to know — what happens if the Tide offers? JOHNSON: I’m not sure. I’m pretty solid to Auburn as of right now. It feels like it’s the fit for me. I’m kind of like Ryan Davis. What he does in that system, I think I can do. I feel like I’d stick. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Why would you say you are solid to Auburn? JOHNSON: They love me. I like it down there. It’s probably the best fit. Good family. Whenever I go down there, that’s what I feel about it. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: The Tigers offered you a scholarship last June and you committed the same day. At the time, not many people really knew about you. Because Auburn offered you early (Mississippi State was his first big offer, Johnson told us) do you feel some amount of loyalty to the Tigers and the coaching staff at Auburn? JOHNSON: Yes, I do. They were one of the first ones to offer me. They knew what I had and they trusted me. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How well do you know fellow Auburn receiver commit George Pickens? You're both from Alabama, both from the metro-Birmingham area. When did you guys meet? JOHNSON: I’ve known him for a long time. We played little league (football) together at Hoover (Ala.). We text sometimes and we talk whenever we see each other. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: You can do a lot of things. Pickens can do a lot of things. And you each do different things well. That could be a dangerous tandem. What do you think it will be like to play with him in college? JOHNSON: It’ll be a lot of fun. He brings a lot to the table and it would be fun watching him and playing with him. AUBURN UNDERCOVER: There also is a heralded quarterback recruit you know well who is headed to Auburn -- Bo Nix. How much are you looking forward to being his teammate and what kind of skill set does he have? JOHNSON: I also think that’ll be fun. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback. He’ll be able to throw the ball and run the ball. He thows a tight spiral. He puts the ball on you. *** A few final notes … -Johnson plans to attend Saturday’s Auburn-Texas A&M game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He already has attended multiple games at Auburn this season. -He will officially visit the Tigers in December. At this time it isn't known if he will officially visit other schools. -Johnson most likely will sign his Letter of Intent in December. As of now, that's what he's thinking he will do.

gctiger 940
This kid will likely be my favorite recruit in this class. I sure hope that he sticks with the good guys! Edited October 30, 2018 by gctiger

Plus you are blessed and I am saved much time by not copying and pasting to every recruit. Not saying it might come in handy for some. @ellitor

Maybe that could have an effect but I don’t think so in the end. Even with all his buddies going to Bama he’s pretty vocal AU to them at school. 2
