Is the Republic Doomed?

Congress rocked by scandal.

One party is ostensibly all about the war on terror, but has us now enmeshed in a religious civil war in Iraq. And is spending money like a pimp witih a week to live on programs wholly unrelated to national defense.

The other party is utterly clueless, continuing to look backwards to its heyday in the 60s and 70s. Nevermind that its economic policies were dismal failures.

There is no enlightened debate. Just squabbling talking heads while our enemies take note.

As long as there is lobbying in DC it continue to spiral downward, that is if hasn't bottomed yet. Ron Paul, Republican of Texas, says take the money out of politics and corruption will follow. Or, words to that affect.

We need to get money out of government. Only then will money not be important in politics. It's time to reconsider exactly what we want the federal government to be in our society. So long as it remains the largest and most powerful institution in the nation, it will remain endlessly susceptible to corruption.

I was interviewed on C-SPAN's morning "Washington Journal," and I used the opportunity, as I do all such media appearances, to point out how many of our liberties have been stolen by the federal government. We must take them back. The Constitution, after all, has a very limited role for Washington, D.C. If we stuck to the Constitution as written, we would have: no federal meddling in our schools; no Federal Reserve; no U.S. membership in the UN; no gun control; and no foreign aid. We would have no welfare for big corporations, or the "poor"; no American troops in 100 foreign countries; no Nafta, Gatt, or "fast-track"; no arrogant federal judges usurping states rights; no attacks on private property; and no income tax. We could get rid of most of the cabinet departments, most of the agencies, and most of the budget. The government would be small, frugal, and limited. That system is called liberty. It's what the Founding Fathers gave us.
