Bowling pins burn at abandoned factory

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a blaze at an abandoned bowling pin factory in Akron over the weekend.

The Akron Volunteer Fire Company responded just after noon Saturday to a fire at the former Brewer’s Bowling Pin Factory at 18 Front St., Chief Keith Hawes reported. It took about six hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused $125,000 damage to the building and $50,000 to its contents, Hawes said.

The building had not been used for 12 years, but there still were bowling pins and a large quantity of chemicals stored inside, according to Hawes and fire dispatchers.
