Auburn student found shot dead off campus

An Auburn University student was found shot to death late Tuesday several miles from campus, her burned-out car left nearer the university, an Auburn spokeswoman said.

The student, from Marietta, Ga., had been identified and her family notified, but authorities have not released her name, said Auburn spokeswoman Deedie Dowdle.

Dowdle said police continue to investigate, and don't believe there is a continuing threat to students. "We're really thinking about her family right now," said Dowdle.

Auburn police did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
