Chancellor Sneaks Out Back Door; Secretary Refuses Student Petitions

Oxford, MS – Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones snuck out the back door of the Lyceum just moments before a group of 40 students presented over 4200 signed student petitions to demand the return of Colonel Reb as mascot for the University of Mississippi. With media outlets present, students peacefully entering the main building on campus only to be surprised when the Secretary to the Office of the Chancellor refused to accept the petitions. Undeterred, the students of the Colonel Reb Foundation left them there anyway.

Colonel Reb Foundation Student Chairman Kellie Norton said, "Former Chancellor Robert Khayat said that school spirit issues should remain with the students. He disagreed often with students, but he listened. Unfortunately, this shows that once again Dan Jones would rather run from students than have to face a dissenting opinion. For him to go out the back door just moments before we arrive reminds me of the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz."

Norton further stated, "I really cannot believe they refused to even accept the petitions from students. We keep telling people that Ole Miss means something special to current and former students, and that we are in danger of losing that ideal. We embody the definition of a Rebel, but the Chancellor obviously doesn’t like Rebels at all."

This week is Colonel Reb Week on the campus of Ole Miss. Tonight is the Great Black Bear Hunt on the Square in Oxford. Students acquire hunting licenses, obtain stickers from seven restaurants on the Square, and then get a T shirt for helping to "kill" the Black Bear. Pictures with a stuffed real bear will then be broadcast on Facebook and Twitter.

Copy of the text of the petitions is as follows: "We declare that Colonel Reb is our one and only preference for the official mascot of the University of Mississippi. We strongly oppose the current administration’s schemes to replace Colonel Reb under the misleading claim that this is a student-led effort, and we strongly oppose any and all replacement mascots. We believe that devising a new mascot is embarrassing and ridiculous. We demand that the current Ole Miss administration and the Athletic Department conform to the will of the overwhelming majority of students and alumni, which is to restore Colonel Reb to his rightful place as the celebrated symbol and primary logo of the University of Mississippi. With our signatures below, we petition for the complete restoration of Colonel Reb as the undisputed and cherished Ole Miss mascot. We also want the Colonel Reb Foundation to be a

fully recognized on-campus student organization, and for the foundation’s fill-in mascot, "Colonel Too," to not be banned from Rebel sporting events. To support this noble cause, we hereby become student members and supporters of the Colonel Reb Foundation."

They could have kept the mascot and change the name to Ole Miss Colonels. Vandy has a Commodore, UTk has a volunteer guy in deer skin, All the other schools have animals as mascots.

So they missed their chance by not just changing the name to Colonels. Looking at their school web site they have removed almost any mention of what their mascot is. And by the way, is a Rebel Black Bear a bear that refuses to leave the picnic area?
