A new Republican Southern Strategy

This a pretty good read about redistricting -and resegregation- in the South.

In virtually every state in the South, at the Congressional and state level, Republicans—to protect and expand their gains in 2010—have increased the number of minority voters in majority-minority districts represented overwhelmingly by black Democrats while diluting the minority vote in swing or crossover districts held by white Democrats. “What’s uniform across the South is that Republicans are using race as a central basis in drawing districts for partisan advantage,” says Anita Earls, a prominent civil rights lawyer and executive director of the Durham-based Southern Coalition for Social Justice. “The bigger picture is to ultimately make the Democratic Party in the South be represented only by people of color.” The GOP’s long-term goal is to enshrine a system of racially polarized voting that will make it harder for Democrats to win races on local, state, federal and presidential levels. Four years after the election of Barack Obama, which offered the promise of a new day of postracial politics in states like North Carolina, Republicans are once again employing a Southern Strategy that would make Richard Nixon and Lee Atwater proud.

First we have attempts at voter suppression and now we have those who want a return to segregation. Disgusting.

"Resegregation?" Really? Hypocritical hyperbole more like it. It's called gerrymandering and the practice has been around since the early 19th century. To act like Democrats don't do it too is delusional thinking on bammie fan levels. And yes, Democrats do it based on race as well. Moral of the story -- win the state legislatures right after the census is taken.

It's easy to see why the dems are pushing this meme.

With Obama's approval rating plunging in all sectors they would want to pump up his base. What better way than to start preaching that the mean, bad ole Republicans want to take the vote away from black Americans.

Dang even Rick Santorum is polling better than Obama:

In a potential Election 2012 matchup, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is at 45% while President Obama earns 44%. This is the first time in any poll that Santorum has led the president. Several other GOP challengers have led the president a single time in the polls including Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich. Each man briefly held the lead while they were surging in the polls, only to fall quickly. It remains to be seen what will happen to Santorum’s support.

Yep it's time to trot out the race baiting hacks in an attempt to try and get the base energized.

Well in that case, since it's always been done, I guess it's ok then...

What you mean is it's A-OK when the dems do it.

Yes, it's an accepted practice. The only time that people openly complain about it is when their side is out of power and subjected to redistricting that dilutes their policital strength. Oh, wait ...

Section two of the voting rights act forbids diluting the minority vote by spreading them out evenly across districts. So, in some ways the voting rights act requires segregation as its definition of one man one vote fairness.

The "intellectual" dishonesty continues.
