Rogers, Tuberville, Carnell Williams All Nominated For Top Collegiate Awards

November 1, 2004

AUBURN -- Auburn running back Carnell Williams, cornerback Carlos Rogers and head coach Tommy Tuberville have all been named as semifinalists for top collegiate awards, the Robert W. Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.

Williams is a candidate for the Maxwell Award, given to the Collegiate Player of the Year. Rogers, meanwhile, is a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award honoring the Outstanding Collegiate Defensive Player while Tuberville is up for the George Munger Award, given each season to the Collegiate Coach of the Year.

NCAA head coaches, members of the Maxwell Football Club as well as sportswriters and sportscasters from across the nation will vote on each award. Voting begins on Nov. 1 and ends the 26th.

The top three candidates for each award will be invited to the ESPN College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9 where each winner will be announced.

Williams, one of 12 candidates for the Maxwell Award, leads Auburn with 862 yards rushing on 167 carries with nine touchdowns. The Attalla, Ala., native has also caught 11 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown. Williams, a senior, is first in the Southeastern Conference and 33rd in the nation in all-purpose yards per game, averaging 132.7.

Rogers, one of 12 candidates for the Chuck Bednarik Award, has broken up five passes this season and collected one interception. Opposing teams have thrown his way just 54 times this season * out of 252 attempted passes against Auburn * and completed only 15. The Augusta, Ga., native also had three tackles for loss and is sixth on the Tigers with 31 total tackles.

Tuberville is one of nine semifinalists for the George Munger Award. He has led the Tigers to a 9-0 overall record and 6-0 SEC mark this season. It marks Auburn's best start to the season since 1994 when the Tigers went 9-0 to begin the year. Now in his sixth season with the Tigers, Tuberville has led Auburn to two SEC Championship game berths, including a trip in 2004, which was clinched with a 35-14 victory over Ole Miss Saturday.

I don't think that Caddy has much of a chance for the Maxwell. He has to do amazing in our last couple of games, but he doesn't get the playing time to win an award of this stature.
