Arkansas hires Chad Morris

Recommended Posts

6 years / 21 million / $3.5 million a year - Chad better get on the phone to his agent and tell him, “you idiot, they would have gone up to $7 million a year”. Lol

They were willing to pay Gus that amount in hopes that AU would not be running up 50 points on them in the future.

But considering that Chad's team was giving up about 35-40 points per game on defense he's fortunate to get that contract.....7-5 at SMU so looks like the hawgs are rolling to dice betting on the future.....and betting that he can find a better DC than he had in Dallas...or Gus will be putting 50 on them again next year..

$7 million minus Chad (HC/OC/QB’s) $3.5 million =$3.5 million. Now if chad can pull a rabbit out of his hat and get Brett Venables (DC/LB’s) for $2 million. See what he did there he got 5 coaches in 2 people. Now Arky still has $1.5 million of “Gus Money” to spend a coaching staff plus what ever else money they were going to throw in for said coaching staff. Now they just have to hope Gus does’nt hang 50 on them.....lol

Good plan....but about everyone on this board was convinced that neither Gus,  nor anyone else could recruit decent football players to Arky so seems they still might be wasting their money.

According to several expert posters during the past week or so, it was pretty much established that nobody can win more than 7 games at that school...maybe 8 in a good season....which fits in pretty well with what Chad was able to do at SMU in his best year....  Seems like a perfect fit. :)

One other thing about Arky.....I'm thinking it was no coincidence that Arky signed up a new AD a couple days ago after the question of Gus was settled and his contract renewed at AU.   The went ahead and hired the guy and then the deal was struck with Chad Morris so they look like they are now set for the coming year.

You know Chad has extensive ties to the Texas High School coaching ranks from his decade or so coaching and I think a couple of State Championships. He proved himself at Clemson and parlayed it into his first HC job, albeit at SMU. Yet even at SMU he recruited well enough to start a turn around with 2 & 3 star recruits. I think at Arky with his Offense and his ties to the Austin and DFW areas especially, he can slowly start recruiting better talent than what he had at SMU. Does that translate to wins, who knows. He still has to get a DC with a D Staff that can hang in the SEC and stop the hemorrhaging......good luck to him.

The DC hire will probably make or break him. Evidently he promised to bring in a big name DC and that helped him get the job.

2019 #2 ranked QB Grant Gunnell said he’s going to take a harder look at Arkansas now with Morris so I can see it already starting to help with Texas recruits. Find it a little ironic that both our new coach and AD came from Texas and were at South Carolina before that.

That's gotta be.....no way he's gonna outscore the big three or four in the SEC West.....AU tried that a couple years and it was painful to score 35-40 points and lose a game.....like being in the Big 12 or something.

Hoping he does well.....but not too well of course.:)

Who is Chad Morris?

He's been the HC at SMU.

Before that, he was the OC at Clemson under Dabo.

The 2 years prior to Morris' arrival, Clemson went a combined 15-12, including a record of 6-7 in 2010. Morris introduced a hurry-up, spread offense that helped Clemson to a 42-11 mark over the next four seasons. In December 2011, Morris became tied with Gus Malzahn as the highest paid assistant in college football after Clemson University gave Morris a six-year contract worth $1.3 million annually

Good point 64. While at it two games IMO have hopefully changed Gus forever.

2014 vs Bammer. 44 points and 630 yards = loss. have a defense.

2017 vs LSU. never let up.

I will gladly give Gus the 3.5 a year over a Chad Morris today.

I wouldn't mock this hire just yet. Chad Morris is no offensive or recruiting dunce and if he stumbles on an up & coming DC like Dabo did with Venables, this could easily make Arky the royal pain in the butt they seem to be every 5 or so years.

Well, he did learn his offense from Gus, so there is that. Gus also recommended him for the job per an insider of theirs.

I thought Venables came to Clemson from Oklahoma and I certainly didn't think he was some babe in the woods.

Venables from Kansas State and Oklahoma before Clemson.....has not moved around much but would definitely be a huge gain for Arky ....but don't see it happening.

When Bret Bielema was hired, he brought in a team that mirrored what Saban was doing in Alabama at the time.  I wondered how he was going to out recruit Saban for the same players, obviously he didn’t.  CBB’s offense lost it’s identity in the last few years that led to his demise.   The defense also hasten his exit at Arky.

With Chad going to Arky, he will be competing with Gus for the same type of players on offense as Auburn.  I hope it ends the same for Arky as it did with CBB.  My concern is how well Chad will be able to recruit the QB position.  Chad seems to have had better “luck” with getting and developing QBs that come out of the HS ranks than Gus has had.

I agree Chad will be recruiting the same type player as Gus, but his bread and butter is Texas, while Gus has Al, GA, FL, MS & TN. Time will tell if Chad expands his recruiting area to OK, LA, MS, TN

I would think he would lean heavily on his former stomping grounds in TX as well.  TN, not so much. :poke:

Gus needs to step up his QB recruiting to TX as well.  With Stidhams success, Gus needs to parlay that into some serious consideration by QB recruits in TX.

He said today he would mainly focus on Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Wouldn’t be surprised if he tries to get some under the radar guys from the Carolinas every once in a while since he probably knows the area well from Clemson.

I think this is a good hire for Arky and if he can find a decent DC, Arky could be difficult in a few years.  I bet he would have easily been in our Top 3-5 candidates if Gus had taken Arky's 7 mil instead of ours.
