The following is the statistical average of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the BCSNC game from 2000-2012. The average comes from reach team's rankings in...

2000: Oklahoma (25.1) vs. Florida State (26.0)

The Sooners had 7 top-20 finishes out of the 13 statistical categories and the Seminoles had 8.

2001: Nebraska (17.2) vs. Miami (17.5)

Both teams had 9 top-20 finishes out of the 13 categories. Though the teams appeared to be even based on their average statistical ranking, Miami was No. 1 in scoring-defense, turnover-margin and pass-efficiency defense.

2002: Miami (29.7) vs. Ohio State (42.4)

The Hurricanes had 6 top-20 finishes and the Buckeyes had only 3.

2003: LSU (15.1) vs. Oklahoma (20.5)

LSU had 9 top-20 finishes and the Sooners had 6.

Southern Cal was voted No. 1 in the AP Poll, finishing with an average ranking of (30.2). This included 6 top-20 finishes among the 13 statistical categories.

2004: Southern Cal (18.3) vs. Oklahoma (23.5)

The Trojans had 10 top-20 finishes and the Sooners had 9.

Auburn finished the season undefeated with an average statistical ranking of 23.5, which included 6 top-20 rankings.

2005: Texas (12.5) vs. Southern Cal (35.9)

The Longhorns had 9 top-10 rankings, making them the highest statistically ranked team among the BCSNC participants. The Trojans had 5 top-10 rankings.

2006: Ohio State (20.6) vs. Florida (27.0)

Both teams had 7 top-20 statistical finishes.

2007: LSU (33.2) vs. Ohio State (35.8)

LSU had 7 top-20 finishes and the Buckeyes had 6. This match up was the only one, where both teams failed to crack the top-30 ranking average.

2008: Florida (18.4) vs. Oklahoma (30.8)

The Gators finished in the top-20 in 11 of 13 statistical rankings. The Sooners had 8 top-20 rankings.

2009: Texas (25.1) vs. Alabama (26.1)

Alabama had 7 top-20 rankings and 6 were in the top-10. Texas finished in the top-20 of 8 statistical categories.

2010: Oregon (20.1) vs. Auburn (30.1)

The Ducks had 9 top-20 rankings and Auburn had 7 but 6 were in the top-10.

2011: Alabama (18.1) vs. LSU (20.6)

Alabama had 9 top-20 rankings and LSU had 8. Alabama was No. 1 in scoring-defense, run-defense, total-defense and pass-efficiency defense.

2012: Alabama (19.2) vs. Notre Dame (48.7)

Alabama had 8 top-20 finished to Notre Dame's 4, including No.1 rankings in scoring-defense, run-defense, total-defense and pass-efficiency offense. The Crimson Tide held an advantage in all 13 categories over Notre Dame.

* The average statistical ranking of the BCSNC participants is currently 23.6.

* Nick Saban's 4 teams that played in the BCSNC game had an average ranking of 1.2 in run-defense, total-defense and scoring-defense.

* Notre Dame's average ranking of 48.7 was the worst among BCSNC participants.

* Besides scoring-offense & defense, the next most highly ranked statistical category has been total-defense (13.7) followed by pass-efficiency defense (13.9). The two lowest categories were KR-defense followed by KR-offense.

So you're saying 2002 was the anomaly/outlier/exception that proves the point of statistical comparisons?

The match up of Alabama and Notre Dame was the worst of all the match ups based on their statistical rankings.
