DE Recruiting

Yes I read that ellitor, but how can a coaching staff be so far behind if they have been in place for 2 years and they knew that D was a big weakness of their personnel when they took the job 2 years ago? It just seems very difficult for me to accept that coaches of this intelligence level haven't been trying to recruit D players since they set foot on campus 2 years ago. Or are you saying it takes longer than 2 years to build relationships with these players?

But I digress... I am no recruiting expert. I follow a few forums and like to read about the talent that AU is recruiting.

Not E, but I know it will be mentioned that Garner needed to coach the DLine players a lot during his 1st year here. They needed a lot of help and we needed several freshmen to play. Garner did a terrific job of this too as Ford became a 1st round draft pick, Lawson and Adams became very good players and Daniel played well last year. So Garner spent almost all his time coaching and did not spend a ton of time recruiting HS Juniors.

And he is talking to and recruiting different DL for AU than he did at UGA. Also it normally 2 years minimum to have a relationship with a player that can get an outcome of signing the kid. All those factors has Garner behind on this class but the good news is he's on pace with the 2016 class.

I get we play a different front, but we are also recruiting the same guys that uga was/is after.

we run an odd defense, players are gonna question it until it proves to benefit them(nfl). it is what it is. recruiting is gonna be tough until they can prove that they can get guys to the next level

There's not going to be some 2015 true Freshman come in and make a difference unless he is another Carl Lawson. In the '14 class we signed Kennion, Thornton and A. Williams. Even without the injuries, the first 2 were undersized and we all knew they would need a year. Williams was the closest to being physically ready, but even with our obvious need at DE, he still hasn't seen the field.

A 2015 recruit likely won't make a meaningful contribution until 2016 and a 2016 recruit in 2017. Our only hope for the 2015 season will be to get a couple solid JUCOs and hope that 1 of them can help out. Lawson, Lambert, President, Kennion, Thornton and Williams are all we really have for 2015. Two of them haven't even played a down yet.

(We can't count on Harrell who had his 2nd major injury. Daniel is a DT and will be needed there.)

I'm not sold on "it takes a long time to build relationships". The Tennessee staff came on board the same time Auburn's did. As we speak, they have one 5* and two 4* DL commits, plus three more 3* guys at the DT/DE positions. We have a total of one 3*. If Tennessee can do it, we should be able to as well. Can you please stop repeating this as if it is scientific theory penned by Stephen Hawking? It is nothing more than a blanket explanation trying to deflect a recruiting pitfall. We are looking good for a couple of 2016 tackles, but where are the ends once again? You've got Marlon Davidson (who is listed up to 260 pounds already on some sites), and that is basically it...and in Davidson's case he is a legacy recruit, which tells me that he'd likely have interest by default.

Not E, but I know it will be mentioned that Garner needed to coach the DLine players a lot during his 1st year here.

An NCAA football team is limited in the amount of hours that they are allowed to practice, and in this conference, everybody is using all of those hours (and probably more illegally). So how exactly does this excuse even make sense? It is essentially suggesting that Rocker didn't have time to recruit because he was "too busy" trying to coach....which is impossible as the NCAA caps just how long he is allowed to "coach", and in any case he would be using all of that time regardless.

Its not like there are coaches out there who are voluntarily cutting practice time so that they can go out and recruit instead. That doesn't happen.

Garner was not recruiting the DEs AU wants. They were LB prospects for UGA and recruited by Grantham not Garner.

Lets hit some balance between firing 'em all and saying the current situation is just lovey-dovey and there's a good excuse for it.

Its been a recruiting fail, which I've been saying for a while now. Even if you want to look forward to the 2016 class, the guys we're looking "good" for are basically all DT's. Garner needs to start making some moves because we are stagnating hard at the DE position.

Of course it couldn't be Ole Ellis' fault...

Are we even recruiting Beckner as a DE?

Don't know. There have been no reports saying where we are recruiting him.

How many NFL, SEC, or ACC teams have two or more pass rush "specialists" on their team? Sabans weakness, according to experts, was a lack of a speed rush guy in 2011 and 2012. My point is, with Lawson on the field, the other DE is a lot better pass rusher, and this discussion is not happening. We've got what we got, at this point, and it's about what everbody else has if Carl doesn't go down, the best I can tell.

I don't think "recruiting as" means anything. Once they sign and get here, or to any other major college, they are placed where they can best help their team, which normally means that's the position where they will best help themselves too.

A cynic would say that sounds a lot like "tell 'em what they want to hear and after they're signed put 'em where you need 'em." He'd be correct.

I dunno. Seems like we've had overlap as far as I can remember- Carl + Dee, Dee + Corey, Corey + Antoine, Antoine + Antonio, Antonio + Quentin, Quentin + Stanley...

(As for the NFL, they have 53-man rosters, so that's a little different.)

I was going to suggest McLoofus run for President. Sounded like he had pretty good judgment.

Nah, Mikey and I don't fight. He's ornery, but he's a good guy.
