PowerOfDixieland 3,226
A smooth ride? Hell no, it's been a roller coaster. When you get such wild swings within an athletic department there's one common denominator. In this case that denominator is ol' double naught himself. Going back to 2009 there have been a total of three teams to win the SEC Championship in football. Two SEC teams have won national championships in that span, and three have played for national championships (one a rematch of an SEC regular season game.). Alabama - SEC Champs 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 (National champs 2009, 2011, 2015. Lost in the playoff first round 2014 to tOSU, lost in championship game 2016) AU - SEC Champs 2010, 2013 (BCS National Champs 2010, lost to FSU in 2013) LSU - SEC Champs 2011 (Lost the rematch in the BCS with bammer in 2011.) Prior to JJ and Chiz and Malzahn, AU's last "recognized" national championship? 1957. Has it been a perfectly smooth ride? Nope. But neither has it been a total disaster save for Chiz's last year in 2012. AU just happens to be competing in the SEC at the same time that bammer has a $aban ally in charge at the NCAA (Emert) and has the REC organized and in full extra benefit mode in a way that no other team will be allowed to do. I don't get the JJ hate. I just don't. Considering what our Tigers have been up against, and considering history. the seven seasons since 2009 (outside of that 2012 thing) have been just not been the disaster that some want to make them out to be. Again, from above, the only team with more than one SEC Championship and a national championship and the opportunity to play for another is....our AU Tigers. Not Florida. Not LSU. Not UGA. Not Tennessee. Auburn. Jay has done some good. But I think everyone's problem with AU's AD is the constant ups and downs. And the downs are more common than the ups. And the fact the the AD always seems to be behind and just starts throwing money at problems with no coherent plan. The new addition to JHS is one example. Just a band aid on a huge problem. And if we are talking football, AU should be distancing it self from the LSU's, uga's, UF's, UT's, UM's & A&M's. But its not. And the reason is self inflicted. All you have to go look at was the recent OC search. It was a absolute cluster. By Gus & Jay. And has made their relationship even more toxic. Another huge problem the football program has right now in regards to recruiting is the abolishment of the Tigerette's / Tiger Host's. All because the compliance department didn't want to do a little extra work. Those thousands of hours of VOLUNTEER work those kids did is sorely missed. Having the compliance department try and go do job has been a huge mistake. And is costing AU a huge sum of money, for no reason. I could go on but you get the point. To be honest, I'm a fence rider with regards to Jay Jacobs. I feel like at the core he has done well for Auburn - negotiated lucrative contracts, keeping the NCAA off campus in every sport for years, adhering to a plan to foster an environment of compliance, and graduating student-athletes at a very high rate. He's fired coaches that needed firing, and he's hired some good coaches as well. For these things I have to give him credit and think he is good for AU. Then all I have to do is look back at the records of the Big 3 Men's Sports at AU over his tenure and I'm ready to kick his ass to the curb. How do you arrive at that conclusion ? That's wishful thinking. Those are THE state universities, have huge alum bases and broad support in their states and other than OM, more money than we ever dreamed of. Accept it...AU is the second university in our state and that's not going to change...and we go head to head in recruiting with what is proven as the best recruiting machine in college football. JMO but a bunch of cute co-eds are not gong to change that. And again....just an opinion, as Baylor and UT have found out in recent years, those programs have a risk associated with them. Sure it's nice to have the volunteers but having a hard time agreeing that something like that is a difference maker. Get and keep a healthy QB and a couple of solid RBs and we are fine. The only not great hire Gus has made was Ellis Johnson, and he has apparently learned from it, based on Muschamp and Steele.

The bulk of it comes form the fact that he's a puppet of the PTB and as such, Auburn fails to innovate. He's just another in a long line of people who learned their job on the job because the good ol boy network promotes from within. He's done some good things at Auburn. The graduation rates are solid and the books stay balanced under his watch. The big issue is that, when it comes to keeping up with the Jones's, he's a day land and a dollar short, mostly because it appears he's reached his ceiling. The rest comes from the fact that he has personally run off some great people in the AD by not being a man of his word, or by just rubbing people the wrong way. Tiger 8,833
I took it as we should be leaving those previously mentioned schools behind because they have been trotting out mediocre seasons year in and year out recently, for the most part, and we still haven't been able to elevate over those schools. Did he really need that to find Chip Lindsey, or is he just interested in covering his ass every time he makes a move? He couldn't be any more gutless. When Auburn began its 10-day search for a new offensive coordinator after Rhett Lashlee left for UConn on Jan. 12, athletic director Jay Jacobs hired a search firm to get coach Gus Malzahn a list of candidates. It came back with “20 to 25” names. Malzahn narrowed them down to Chip Lindsey. http://www.oanow.com/sports/college/auburn/football/ad-jay-jacobs-auburn-hired-search-firm-to-come-up/article_e64b1c76-ea5e-11e6-bb08-8f680f09a921.html pretty standard and not only with coaching. we have some great facility/research members via recruiting and search firms. lots of grants brought in. feel confident that Gus was allowed to get his man. think we finally got it right in baseball. imaolgatiger 523
You hire a search firm to get around having to ask permission to speak to someone under contract and to cover the University. The search firm is able to gauge interest of a possible candidate without the school breaching protocol and to lay the ground work of salaries, etc.. See the Bobby Petrino/Jetgate fiasco. The Louisville AD publicly flogged us for not getting permission to speak to Petrino. Auburn learned our lesson on that one. I know it doesn't fit some of your agendas of bashing Gus/JJ on EVERY decision(and there are some that deserve it), but that is the reason you separate the school from the search. How embarrassing would it be to ask permission to speak to a coach under contract, they decline and the info goes public? Some on this board acted like complete morons during the search as it was. But don't consider any of the possible reasons that this may have occurred and you can bet your AZ that it was approved. As was mentioned in this thread, Gus had a list, but some of the names weren't on the PTB's list. Let these PTB get involved, as in the past, and SACS will bring out their colonoscopy equipment on us AGAIN! Didn't one of the current PTB reach out directly to Houston "Freakin" Nutt and caused the Tubberville payout?

PowerOfDixieland 3,226
Pretty sure Jacobs' is making this up. I'd like to see an invoice (or public confirmation from the search firm), and the list. No way a formal list of "probably 20-25 names" was presented to Gus for him to pick from. No freakin' way...Jacobs is such a liar. In one of the interviews he actually says "I saw the list". He saw the list??? Really???

Did he really need that to find Chip Lindsey, or is he just interested in covering his ass every time he makes a move? He couldn't be any more gutless. That's not Jacobs or even Auburn AD... That's college. Colleges and universities are programmed to hire a search firm every time they have a major vacancy. My wife works for a tiny college and they literally spend more money on search firms than they do on the salaries of most of their administrative staff. Every time someone in any level of management leaves, they hire a search firm. At one point they had so many search firms working for them that they didn't have enough staff to be on each search committee.
auburnphan 6,050
HIring of a Head Coach will usually result in a search firm being hired by the university, extremely rare for an assistant coach hire to have a search firm hired
