Texas A&M preparing to move on from Kevin Sumlin

Kevin Sumlin will not be back as Texas A&M in 2018, and the school has begun making preparations for his departure, team sources tell The Read Optional.

Sources at multiple levels of the football administration have been told to prepare for a 2018 season without Sumlin, including notifying the communications department to prepare its strategy, and draft statements, at the conclusion of the season.

It’s anticipated Sumlin will be relieved at the end of the season, with an interim coach named for the Aggies’ Bowl Game, provided the side wins one of its last three games. There is, however, an outside chance that Sumlin could be let go before then, provided the sides come to a mutual agreement.

FootballScoop reported on Sunday that Sumlin will be out at the end of the season unless something “unforeseen” happens, leading to an early removal.

Sumlin’s buyout currently sits at $10.4 million, without an offset or stretch provision (meaning he would get it all in one lump sum within 60 days of his dismissal). The contract also has a separate agreement with #YESSIR, LLC, a company Sumlin is the President of. Sumlin’s contract states the school must pay #YESSIR, LLC corporate payments through December 2019.

At this year’s SEC Spring meetings, AD Scott Woodward made it clear that this year was completely different than the past. “He has to win this year”, Woodland said, “He has to do better than he has done in the past”.

Change is on the horizon.

A&M currently sit at 5–4 on the year, needing to win out to achieve the same win/loss record as the previous two seasons. That appears unlikely. The team is coming off back-to-back loses: A 42–27 loss to Auburn on Saturday, and a 35–14 loss to Mississippi State the previous week.

Is Woodward available?
