In 1996 The UK Decided that The Lives of Children were more important than anything else.

March 13, 1996, a man named Thomas Hamilton took 4 legally, privately owned handguns (2 9mm Browning HP Pistols, and 2 S&W M19 .357 Magnum revolvers) into Dunblane Elementary school in Scotland, UK and killed 16 children, 1 teacher, and injured 15 others before shooting himself in the head ending his own life.

The public and government outrage and demands for action in the UK led to the banning of handguns in the UK and regulation on other weapons, with the government at the time instituting buybacks to pay private citizens compensation to turn their guns in.

March 13 1996 was the last school shooting in the UK

1 event....1 massacre of school children and the people of the UK decided that that was enough...and that its impossible to prevent mass shootings and school shootings when you have broad, wide spread access to private firearm ownership...and they decided to do something about it.

They didn't institute any new mental healthcare reforms,

They didn't say "why did this person shoot these children, lets focus on that, not on how he did it."

They didn't say "guns don't kill people...people do"

They didn't say. "a right to own guns is more important to me than anything else."

They took action....they banned handguns....

and it worked.

The fact that no one responded to this thread is pretty much an indictment of where we're at a country. These people don't care about gun tragedies. I want to say that I believe they'll finally care if it affects them, but I'm not so sure anymore. What would it take for them to finally care? I truly don't know. Perhaps a gun shooting that claims the life of a prominent GOP congressperson's kids?

I'm disheartened by this poll by CNN44% of Republicans said that mass shootings are something we have to accept as part of a free society. (A majority of Republicans – 56% – said mass shootings are something we can prevent and stop if we really tried.

Republicans would be more likely to respond by arming everyone to “level the field.”

Since there have been conversations about arming teachers in their classrooms, this could be taken as a suggestion and not a joke.

As we have seen several times recently bad guys don't need guns to kill. Knives work almost as well and it's more gruesome. Do we ban some kind of knives?

How many times has someone walked into a school, stabbed and killed ten people in under ten minutes?

Please share all of these recent mass stabbing incidents.

Correct.

But guns make killing a lot easier and quicker and more effective. Outside of hunting rifles and sport shooting, killing and maiming is what guns are specifically designed and created to do....and they do that very, very well.

That's why a large majority of murders and killings are done with guns.

I don't believe there is any evidence that this is true.

Knives CAN kill. They CAN cause a lot of damage, but they are not 'almost as effective' as guns at harming or killing in large populations. Not even close.

There are a few specific mass killings with knives in the world, but those pale in comparison to the yearly mass shootings in the US.

for example: The US has a much higher murder rate per capita than the UK. A majority of murders in the US are via gun.

If knives and other objects are just as easy to kill with as guns are then why do countries with stricter gun laws all have vastly less murders and mass killings than the US? And why are most murders in the US committed with guns if other objects (like knives) are just as effective and even easier to get than guns?

American schools don't have "knife attack drills" for children every month. They have "shooting" drills.

You also can't "knife" people/cars while standing by the roadway. You cant do "drive by knifing" on peoples houses.

But, in this country:

Missouri Republicans vote to allow children to carry guns

Only one GOP lawmaker voted to ban children open carrying on public land without adult supervision

How about this one? Only one but could have been more.

Yet another shooting at Michigan State University yesterday. This on the day before the Parkland shooting five years ago.

And the suspect is a guy that likes guns. liked having them...liked shooting them...and apparently got to a point that he wanted to shoot other people with them.

This is now the 67th mass shooting in the US in 2023 alone. 45 days have passed in this year. We're averaging one and a half shooting per day.

Maybe this is part of the problem with violence in our schools.

No photo description available.

Japan's (for one example) population is 1.6% Christian with a mostly secular society, and has little to no violence or shootings in it's schools.

A lot of mass shooters in America kill themselves or are killed by the police afterwards.

Many of these people don't care about jail, police, or death. The point for many shooters isn't to kill and get away...it's to kill and then die themselves.

Quick and sever punishment doesn't matter. most European Countries don't have the death penalty and also have little to no school shootings.

Welcome to the US. Home to Baseball, the American bald eagle, and the American made AR-15 Rifle...the preferred weapon of mass murders and school shooters nation wide!!! God Bless America!

https://www.al.com/politics/2023/02/alabama-congressmans-bill-would-make-ar-15-the-national-gun-of-america.html

Quote

Alabama congressman’s bill would make AR-15 ‘the National Gun of America’

From “The Star Spangled Banner” to the hamburger, the United States has a number of official national symbols.

An Alabama congressman’s bill would add another: a national gun.
Rep. Barry Moore visited a Troy gun shop on Tuesday to unveil legislation making the AR-15 the “National Gun of America.”
“The anti-Second Amendment group won’t stop until they take away all your firearms,” the Republican congressman said in a statement after announcing the legislation at Family Firearms in Troy. “One rule to remember: any government that would take away one right would take away them all.”

The House has not been given the full text of the bill, according to congressional records, but the legislation would “declare an AR-15 style rifle chambered in a .223 Remington round or a 5.56x45mm NATO round to be the National Gun of the United States.”

The weapon of choice for mass murders / shooters is the 9mm semi auto pistol.  The politicians only talk about semiautomatic rifles because they haven’t a clue about what to do about inner city gun violence using handguns.
