Special teams ace Jonathan Lowe, an SEC All-Freshman performer in 2004, has transferred from Mississippi State and enrolled at the University of Alabama.

...

Lowe (5-foot-6, 180), the son of former Tide player Eddie Lowe and nephew of ex-Bama standout Woodrow Lowe, will have to sit out the 2006 season. The former Phenix City Central standout told the East Alabama Journal he has received his release from Mississippi State and will begin at Alabama on a Bryant legacy scholarship provided to the children [of] former players under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

I remember this topic being discussed in a thread some time ago, but I forgot what the conclusion was, so once again: Do these Bryant Scholarship recipients count against the NCAA limits on scholarshipped players? If not, what prevents a school from awarding unlimited numbers of such "non-athletic" scholarships? [Not that all Bryant Scholarship winners play sports, but for those that do...? I guess the same could be asked about other academic scholarship recipients at any school who choose to participate in varsity athletics--how does this affect NCAA limits?]

My understanding is that they would NOT count against what you can give out annually, BUT that they DO count against the 85 max on scholly, which could make the other a moot point.

That is my understanding as well. They do not count against the yearly 25 UNLESS the kid plays before his sophomore year. They do count agianst the total of 85.

That's basically the way it works. That's the way an academic scholly works also.

A loophole scholarship named after the loophole scholarship king.

Tell that to my roomate who was on the Bryant scholarship and didnt play sports.

Tell that to the 7 or 8 people i knew while i was at bama who were at bama on the bryant scholly...but otherwise wouldnt be able to.

Non recruited walkons play for every school out there. Bryant schollied athletes are not different. They cant be recruited. They cant be high profile. Any situation where they would have otherwise been on athletic scholarship would automatically override the bryant scholly and count against the numbers.

Brodie Croyle is an example of that. He counted against our 25 because he had to be on a football scholly instead of the bryant scholly

Just a question here for clarification. If brodie had been on a "bryant" scholly, would he still have been sacked ELEVEN times? :):roflol::roflol::roflol:
