Our position: A boycott of McCain's commencement address is pure intolerance.

Hard to pinpoint exactly when intolerance became the rage at so many college campuses. But it's set to take center stage on Friday in New York City, where students and faculty of the New School say they'll boycott a commencement speech by Sen. John McCain.

A more outrageous happening they can't imagine: A government official, whose ideas they don't embrace, actually is being given the opportunity to address them.

How, though, do they imagine they'll make the impact they want in life by steering clear of anyone they disagree with?

Like him or not, McCain's effectiveness in Congress comes from his willingness to work with people whose ideas don't match his. There's a lesson in there for anyone at the New School willing to hear it.
