Michigan State apparently will make a run at former 49ers and Lions coach Steve Marriucci, who is close friends with Spartans basketball coach Tom Izzo. Another interesting name is former Michigan player and current Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur.

Two names that popped up as possible successors to Dan McCarney at Iowa State are Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell and former Nebraska head coach and current Ohio University head coach Frank Solich.

Should the Miami job come open as expected, with Butch Davis likely headed to North Carolina, look for the top candidates to replace Larry Coker to be former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez and Rutgers coach Greg Schiano.

Alvarez, who stepped aside as football coach at Wisconsin this season but remained as athletic director, has hinted recently he might be interested in getting back into coaching.

With Walt Harris' future at Stanford looking uncertain, San Jose State coach Dick Tomey could get the call

If Barry Alvarez retired from coaching to just do the athletic director's job, but is now interested in getting back into coaching, does that mean that he was just not interested in coaching, or just not interested in coaching at Wisconsin?
