Browns pick Marshall to coach offensive line

Saturday, January 27, 2007Mary Kay CabotPlain Dealer Reporter

The Browns have hired former Houston Texans assistant Steve Marshall as their offensive line coach, a source close to the situation said Friday night.

Marshall had recently been hired by Nick Saban to be offensive line coach at Alabama, but opted to return to the NFL, the source said. Browns General Manager Phil Savage, who was in Mobile, Ala., for today's Senior Bowl, could not be reached for comment.

Marshall was fired by the Texans after the 2005 season - a year in which Houston's line surrendered a league-high 68 sacks, all of them absorbed by quarterback David Carr. Marshall spent the 2006 season out of football before being hired by Saban earlier this month.

In 2004, Marshall joined the Texans as assistant line coach after more than 20 years in the college ranks. He replaces Jeff Davidson, who was hired this week as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.

Marshall was chosen from among a field that included former Atlanta Falcons offensive line coach Tom Cable, former Panthers offensive line coach Mike Maser and former Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Steve Loney. Cable has been offered the offensive line coach job at Oakland.

The Texans promoted Marshall to offensive line coach after Chris Palmer was fired as offensive coordinator early in the 2005 season. With only one NFL season as the primary line coach under his belt, Marshall assumes the dubious task of rebuilding the Browns' ailing line and helping rejuvenate the league's 31st-ranked running game.

Prior to joining the Texans, Marshall was offensive line coach at the University of Colorado from 2000-03. He also has coached at Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, the University of North Carolina and Tennessee.

You shop - we shop. Applies to coaches also. Maybe Marshall saw the light...

I kind of hate to hear this. Marshall did not send shock waves of fear thru the AU Nation. This just gives slick nick a chance to get a better boob.

Maybe he got to T-Town, saw what a major job overhauling the O-Line there is going to be, and decided to go where he had a better chance to get the job done soon.

i don't think it will or should bother most folks. another opportunity opened up after he took the :ua: job, and if thats whats right for him, then well wishes to him and his family. you can't hate someone for bettering themselves or their family.

Well, we really don't know how good of a coach he might have been.

Right now, most Bama fans are completely engrossed in the recruiting scene and have paid little attention to it. Since he left to go back to the NFL, I think most will overlook it as a blip.

Of course, Auburn fans and others now get the opportunity to spin something negatively, and I don't begrudge that. I do know that he and Pendry are the two coaches I have seen the most dislike for on the boards due to their performance with the Texans. Most Bama fans also realize that a trained monkey could do a better job with the O-line than Bob Connelly did. Connelly was by far the most despised Shula assistant and Shula's choosing not to fire him was probably the 95lb straw on the camel's back for most. I know Quentin Groves hated to see Connelly go. :glare:

The rumor is Dabo Swinney to WR coach and Pendry to coach OL and be the OC.

CDS is an asst at Clemson now. I really havent seen anything to verify this so far, but that is the rumor.

Dabo is still there? How has he made it unscathed thru being an assistant under Dubose, Franchione, Price, and Shula? Or did he leave and come back?

What's funny is when I read this I thought it was an Auburn fan making a joke on what a bammer would say. Only later when I saw it in quotes did I realize it was actually the bammer caricature himself.

DKW, I have not heard anything about bringing in Swinney, but that would be a great move. It would also make Dabo the only Alabama alum on the field staff.

I have always liked Dabo Swinney. Have you heard this through circles somewhere?
