Expect more sour grapes from Gainesville

Tell me again how Florida was glad to see Cam Newton go.

Go ahead. I love to laugh.

Consider the impact the former Gator quarterback and his new team had on the Florida legacy Saturday during Auburn's 56-17 victory.

Auburn broke the SEC Championship Game record for points scored. The old record? Florida's 45 against Alabama in 1996.

Auburn broke the SEC Championship Game record for margin of victory, winning by 39. The old record? Florida's 31-point win over Arkansas in 1995.

Auburn's Darvin Adams broke the SEC Championship Game record for receiving yards with 217. The old record? Florida's Reidel Anthony had 171 yards here in 1996.

And Newton, the game's MVP? He matched the SEC Championship Game record for touchdown responsibility with a career-best six, four throwing and two running. Who will have to share that mark? Florida's Danny Wuerffel, who threw six TD passes here in 1996.

Newton also became just the second player in NCAA FBS history to throw and run for 20-plus touchdowns in a single season. The first? Florida legend Tim Tebow.

Tebow accounted for 55 TDs during his Heisman season in 2007. Newton's total stands at 49 and counting on his way to the Heisman.

And just think. Newton matched and topped some Florida history Saturday against another Florida legend, Steve Spurrier.

Maybe it was a good thing the Gators lost to Spurrier and South Carolina in November in the game that decided the SEC East title. Otherwise, they would've had to watch Newton go wild in person Saturday and face the truth.

They were a shadow of their championship selves without him this season. Anything that anyone connected to that program has said or will say about not missing him is a big, heaping pile of sour grapes.
