yep...glad he can't run off after one year.....

Both of them.

The differences are very distinct.  Williams caresses the ball to the gap in right center and Julien just attacks the ball.

Julien gets hit on a 3 ball pitch....takes the base and a new pitcher coming for Samford to face Venter.  Dunn playing all the odds......or maybe just wanting some of his young guys to get some time on the mound..

new pitcher with 15 walks in 17 innings...

So Venter with 2 runners on......

Venter with two runners on...2 outs .....

Venter gets under it a bit and it only makes it to the warning track in center to end the inning.

Last chance for Samford....

And Anderson to try and finish the game...

two bouncer to Holland and that's out one...

next batter doubles down into the LF corner.....runner on 2nd

Last few outs of a game are often difficult....Fly ball to Williams  in RF

One more out needed.....runner almost picked off second....would have been embarrassing to get caught for the last out of game when you are 5 runs down.

And grounder to Venter for out 3 and nice save by Anderson.

7-2 final

If Mize can bring us a win (should be able to) We have a chance of taking the series. Gotta keep the bats going though to get there.

Holland walks on 3-2 count and Williams singles to right  to put runners on first and third with no outs...

Wright lifts a foul ball deep along the LF foul line for an out....and Holland scores....AU up 1-0 and Williams holds.

Grounder to second and Venter lines to left and the inning is over...

1-0 for AU

Random question for you baseball people ... would it have been smart to let the foul ball drop and keep the runner from tagging and scoring?  Or do you take the out and knowingly give up the run?

At that point in the game you usually take the out.....like a fielder choice in a DP that lets a run score...Later in a tie game for example  you might do differently?

This seems like one of those games AU would typically look sloppy playing midweek. Good to see a solid performance carry over from a big sweep last weekend. AU can really get back on track with a series win this weekend. Definitely rolling in with some momentum!

Auburn seems to be out of its mid season swoon. A nice pitching performance sets the staff up for the weekend. Hopefully Auburn will win one. At the least, make all three games competitive

Agree....seems like the pitching staff is being tuned up for the final few weeks....and good outing last night by two long bull pen pitchers...Owen and Anderson and seeing less of guys who can't seem to find the strike zone.    It's college of course and strange things can happen and of course Samford is not the SEC but pitching is looking more reliable and there is Greenhill to hold a lead if needed.

The big question mark among prospective starters is Davis Daniel....great talent but wheels come off with no warning....seems wise to have someone warm in the bullpen anytime he is on the mound, and especially with men on base. Could be good middle relief if he can come in with bases empty.  Coker is a mystery to me.

Mize, Burns, Mitchell, all looking very good now as starters....that's how I would plan the weekend....

Should be a great weekend of baseball...

About the only time you would consider allowing it to drop is if the (walk-off) winning run was at third and it was obvious the throw would not get the tagging base runner at home.  Unless you've got Dave Parker in right....

  • WarTiger changed the title to baseball vs. Samford

I remember that guy well.  The first time I ever heard of him was in the spring of '82 when his McAdory Yellow Jackets came to Vestavia to play in the Rebel Classic.  The rumor going around the facility was that there was a guy who had never been caught stealing, which was a challenge to this old catcher.  What stands out in my memory was that he hit a ball out to dead center, which in those days was close to 400' and had a 20' high batters' eye.  That ball was knocking tree limbs out of the pines and still ascending when it went out of sight.  And yes, he had a pretty decent arm.
