Bars We've Been In

Recommended Posts

Well I decided I would start this thread. it's bar/dives we've been in. I've got a ton of story's if I can remember them. Let me just start with this one. My first real job after grad. from Auburn was a sale rep for Mckesson Drug Co out of Miami my territory was anything out of the mainland United States this included the Keys.

One story...... I was working in Jamaica I went to many bars in Jamaica one time I ran into Bob Marley yep that Bob Marley. He would play in certain bars at times. Yes there was weed everywhere but I did not partake I had to take lie detector tests at random. Back then, 70's, liguor and beer were very cheap in the islands coke and pepsi was much more expensive.. I'll see if this thread gets any traction if so I will tell as many story's as I can remember.

As a tease I got a good one about Ted Kennedy in Palm Beach

The Red Dog Saloon, Juneau, Alaska

There is a stuffed 10' brown bear standing in the back and Wyatt Earp's hand gun hanging on the wall.

Got thrown out of the Temple Bar in Dublin.  I kept getting our group to set at Bono's table; it was the only table open upstairs.  It was Saint Patty's Day and they  were waiting on him to arrive.  Over a couple of hours we hijacked it 4 times.  They finally tired of it...

Recall you mentioning running with the Kennedy’s. How many bars in the place and what kind of scotch?

LOL not at their place sorry to say it was a certain bar in Palm Beach just down the road from their place. I'll tell the story's later. Keep in mind I was not a big fan of his except if he was buying the drinks this was after Chappaquiddick

The Apple Barrel in New Orleans. Great live music. The bands set up in the space right by the front door. If you want to leave once a set has started, you have to walk over cords and in front of someone playing or singing.

40 and plus years ago the Plaza on Southside. If you wanted other than longneck bottle beer and Stewart sandwiches go elsewhere. Thursday nights and always the late night “last stop”. Auburn students, alum, fans had some great times on Iron Bowl weekend. Especially during the 80’s

Molly’s on Toulouse is my favorite dive right off of Bourbon Street. No one is ever in there other than regulars, the beer selection sucks, they don’t do fancy cocktails, great jukebox. They don’t even have a website. Epitome of a dive bar. It’s a great little spot to chill and get away from all the buzz just a block or two away.

After I got out of the Coast Guard I worked off shore on drill platforms in the Gulf of Mexico for sixteen years.  Mostly out of Louisiana but for a while out of Dauphin Island AL.  So many sleazy bars in South Louisiana and none that I remember the name of.

Almost any bar in Algiers on the west bank of New Orleans would be considered dives and or neighborhood bars.  So many forgettable bars from Venice, LA up to Chalmette & Algiers, Grand Isle, Morgan City & Houma.   Somewhere in south Mississippi there was a place called The Pines.  A gravel parking lot, cold beer, loose women and always someone looking for a fight.

The Reef in Perdido Key, Pensacola, a local bar and all kinds of people.

One place I always had a good time was the Flora-Bama!

Sailed into Bimini at sunup with a group from Auburn.  None of us had ever sailed before and we chartered the boat out of Miami with a captain.  He turned out to be a complete coke-head and it's a miracle we survived the 1st night at sea.

We snorkled the length of the island by 10:00 am and went looking for drinks.  Walked down "the street" into Alice Town and went to the Complete Angler hotel...it had a bar in the lobby that wasn't open. We got them to open it but the bartenders heart wasn't in it.

He kept leaving for long stretches as we had more.  Finally we got tired of waiting him out and me and a buddy went behind the bar and started mixing drinks and keeping up with the tab.  It didn't take much experience to pour bourbon in a glass.  But for every one we mixed, we had one.  When the bartender finally came back he found us pouring Jack Daniel's in a continuous stream in a row of glasses (I was told this later). He got a bit upset and had us escorted back to the dock.  Slept it off on the dock under the watch of Biminis only Jean Darme and we sailed out for West End after we collected everyone.

The Angler was an old haunt on Bimini mostly famous for Hemmingway's time spent their while he lived and wrote in Bimini. Lots of old memorabilia,  photos, etc., of him and fishing life from the area.  It burned down a few years ago...

Spotted Cat next door, too. And Blue Nile down the block.

Yes, Molly's.

Actually, should we just do a New Orleans thread? We haven't even gotten to the historic cocktail bars. Or Avenue Pub. Or...

Yeah, this is good thread. Real good thread. Let's get filthy. *clink*

Wife and I were driving to North Al from Orlando back in the 90's to see my folks. I always like to take back roads well somewhere between Dothan and Troy Al on a two lane road came across a bar in the middle of no where had a sign Johnny Paycheck playing tonight well of course I had to stop and go in. Wife said hell no she's not going in. The bar couldn't hold more then 30 people. Went in and there sits Johnny and maybe 5 other people having beers............I partook of a few drinks Johnny nicest guy you would ever want to meet why in the hell he was there I'll never know. The bar was dark/smoke filled had a few tables and the actual bar was only about 20 feet L shape with crooked stools.

Too many to name really, but leaving the normal places out: The Last Chance as you leave mainland Florida for the Florida keys. Alabama Jack's on Card Sound road north of Key Largo. The Stampede in West Miami. The Pink Pony at Gulf Shores. Wander Inn at Port St. Joe. Wonder Bar at Mexico Beach. The Cantina at Apalachicola. Let's don't leave out the War Eagle Supper Club.

PS: I forgot Uncle Mike's in Beebeetown, Iowa. Good ol' corn fed girl behind the bar. Kept charging me for singles while serving doubles because she liked to listen to my "drawl". One of my better episodes of daytime drinkin'.

PPS: Forgot The Dead Goat in Salt Lake City. That was some scene. BB King had played there, but that was before I passed through.
