2000 Rookie of the Year, beating Jr. for the award. (This won me 8 bottles of Crown Royal and 4 cases of 7Up)

Mr. Consistency: Was so good at being consistent (required to win the Cup back in the Winston days) that NASCAR changed how to win a Championship when he won the Cup by winning one race. All this change due to him not being a crowd favorite or a speech slurring redneck, and his name wasn’t Earnhardt, Gordon, or Petty.   Matt won the 3rd race of the year the "UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400". He took the points lead in Week 4 of the 2003 season and built his points lead so big that he clinched the Cup after week 35, finishing 4th at Rockingham. All Matt had to do for his final race was start.

NASCAR reacted like little kids after that season, changing the format to its current iteration. They still can't seem to get it right though as they tweak it each year (Sound familiar?).  Funny thing about it was that In 2002, he won more races than any other driver that year with 5 wins. It's funny that NASCAR and their media spinners weren’t screaming that the driver with the most wins in 2002 should win the cup, like they were in 2003.

I feel obligated to put Bill Elliot on here as he is my cousin. Bill was also the driver Matt substituted to get his first ever Cup start in the #94 McDonalds Ford at Dover in 1998. Matt finished in 6th.

My all time favorites though are Davey Allison (who was an Auburn fan) and Dale Jarrett.

Personally, I find NASCAR exceptionally boring.  I do love some F1 racing though, it's just hard to watch it live because of time differences.

He is not overrated. He is just the mos popular driver. And the most popular at anything always gets alot of attention.
