I'm an old D-Line/LB guy Stat. You're gonna have to speak English if I'm suppose to take anything away from these #'s. (You can PM each other jokes about me and my lack of #'s knowledge) Hey, at least I can admit it!! :dunno:

Yards per play have increased, and number of plays to get a TD have decreased.

Looks like the O is gaining on the D!

The numbers I posted reflected the increase in yards per play and the improvement in touchdown ratio or TD's per play, since 1970.

On the same subject, the top-10 offenses from 2010-2012 are currently gaining 15% more yardage per game than the top-10 offenses during the decade of the 70's. Though they are roughly operating on the same number of plays per game, the increase is because of the improvement in yards per play. I believe this is the result of the increase in passing compared to the 70's.

I agree with Stat on the passing aspect but I also think offensive players and coaches are better as seeing what the defense is willing to give up and how better to attack different personnel.

Total number of teams averaging 290 or more yards rushing per game by decade:

1970-1979: 84

1980-1989: 49

1990-1999: 29

2000-2009: 19

2010-2012: 13

Based on the current trend from 2010-2012, FBS teams are on pace to have 43 for the decade, which comes close to the decade of the 80's. That might be something to watch for.

Wow

at risk of being accused of "data mining,"

over the period, an ~16% in in ypp resulted in ~1/4 reduction in plays-per-TD

Looks like a huge scoring payback as you cross a 6.4-6.5 ypp threshold

That is what I was asking. I knew what the abbreviations were and what they meant I was just curious what you were saying to look for. Now I see. And as teams have adjusted to defending the pass the OC's have started running more again though I can't see us ever going back to the old 3 yards and a cloud of dust that was NCAA Football pre-1980's.

Here's to hoping that

dusting off the Wing-T, and

running it from shotgun, results in

6.95 yards and a cloud of dust

Stat do you have any info on if take aways have increased in this same time period?

Sorry, I don't. My guess though would be that turnover ratio has decreased since the 1970's. I say this because I know there a higher ratio of interceptions thrown back then because the rules were not in place to protect the WR's. Passing offenses are much more efficient now and I can't see a dramatic increase in fumble ratio.

For example, if you take the top-25 pass offenses from 1989 based on yards per game, they tossed a pick every 25.2 pass attempts. If you compare it to the top 25 pass offenses from 2012, they threw an interception every 40.4 attempts.

I'm willing to bet to counter the offense that take aways have increase as well

If you take the top-10 passers from each decade based on pass efficiency, here are their interception ratios...

1980-1989: 1 every 26.7 attempts

1990-1999: 33.2

2000-2009: 44.9

2010-2012: 47.8

The NCAA did not begin the efficiency formula until the 1979 season, so I don't have the data for the decade of the 70's. It was 1 every 27.7 attempts in 1979 for the top-10 most efficient passers.

Thanks anyway....I didn't even think about the rule changes having an effect....my thought was that takeaways may be higher seeing that a lot of defenses play a high risk/reward style now trying to counter the spread
