Screw them. This after they were yelling that he sucks, he's overhyped, got paid, etc? They sure are fun to laugh at, aren't they? Well to be fair, there are loads of threads here were posters basically say the same thing about kids who choose other schools. mcgufcm 4,107
I'd say any WR that can stretch the field and/or provide a big-bodied target has a shot at cracking the starting lineup at some point next year. I doubt any Freshman is going to be an opening day starter at any position. That happens so rarely that it's kind of like taking "the field" against Tiger Woods back in the day. No matter how good the one guy is, I'm playing the better odds with the field. When I look at our current WRs, it seems to me that we don't have great pass-catching options at TE (where the tragedy of Jakell Mitchell's death took away the guy we recruited to fill that void) or a big-bodied WR in the mold of Duke Williams/Melvin Ray. That's a role Jason Smith and Tony Stevens can't fill. They just don't have the frame. Now, maybe that's just a role that doesn't get filled next year, but it's certainly an opportunity. Second, I'd say we don't have a clear deep threat. Jason has the speed to do it. Tony has the length you want. Still, neither has done it, and Jason's best use appears to be more as a sweep runner/slot option because he's quick as a cat. There's definitely opportunity in that role as well. Interesting. I thought DE would be by far our deepest position next year, with Cowart, Lawson, Davidson, Tega, James...am I missing anyone? Surprised that they would move him to DE, especially given how weak we are at TE, but I won't question Gus's decision on that. Rice must have some SERIOUS skills if Gus is even thinking about doing that.

mcgufcm 4,107
Davidson is a DE or swing player next year. He doesn't have the bulk to be a full-time DT. I very seriously doubt we move Rice from TE. If he's good enough to play the position, that's the area of need. You don't experiment with a guy to add depth to deep area (Lawson, Cowart, Holland moonlighting as a pass rush specialist, James, Kennion, Tega, Davidson, and possibly Coe constitutes a deep area) when you have a gaping hole that that same guy could fill. It's not as if Laye or Harris staked a claim to the TE position this year.

mcgufcm 4,107
Yeah, I saw him at UA. He absolutely could play DT for us as early as 2017, but he's not going to be a full-time DT next year. If the only snaps he's getting are at DT next year, it means he's not playing much. My guess is, assuming he cracks the rotation, it'll be as a swing player giving us snaps at DT in rabbit personnel and DE any other time.
ellitor 33,114
Davidson is a DE or swing player next year. Not sure when he'll move but most say he's better suited to be a DT than DE. It won't take much for him to put on 30 lbs to play DT in the SEC, especially being an EE & getting an early start on it.
cole256 17,084
All that's fine, and I'm very happy to have him, but we need d ends. Letting up on that guy and pretty much giving him to Florida.
