Yup. Joiner only had 4 carries (not counting receptions) all last year. The dude is 6'4" 231 lbs. and fast.

He sure is, Joiner is one of my favorite players. He can do a lot more than he has been allowed to do so far, especially in the run game. Reports are he worked hard in the off season adding 16 lbs. to his frame. With his speed, that height and weight, he is a load to bring down. All he needs is his chance and I think he will prove himself regardless of who is "in front of him."

FWIW, that wasn't a wheel, the route wasn't vertical enough. Looked more to me like a checkdown to the RB or a swing RB screen

QB (looks like Grad Transfer Grant Loy) clearly throwing the ball horizontally, with WR 23 (Caylin Newton) appearing to break down his route to block

Joiner has to turn to catch the ball while running horizontally

Annotation 2020-08-23 125936.png

Example from Oregon of combining that concept with a "tunnel" screen on the backside:

Edit: WR 6 (Ja'varrius Johnson) was also already blocking as soon as Joiner caught the ball:

You are correct. The first time I watched the video I missed the blocker and just caught joiner catching it at a angle seemed like a wheel. I hoe to H. J. more involved this year. I think he has mega potential.

Listened to Duke the Scoops pod this morning and shed a little more light on the scrimmage but still not a ton of new info.  He said MAR, Worm, and Tank really stood out in the backfield.  Said Worm May have benefited from no track last Spring.  He also mentioned Joiner looking good.  On the Oline mentioned Alec Jackson, Council, and Jones playing well.  I hadn’t heard much about Alec so that’s good.  Said Frazier made a nice catch.  On the D he said Newkirk and Pappoe have stood out.  Pappoe especially has been bringing the thunder.  Steiner has played well but may be too aggressive.  I’m sure the coaches will work through that.  He also went over recruiting a bit but I’m not the biggest recruiting guru.  It’s only 25 minutes so give it a listen if you get some free time.

I posted this in the other scrimmage thread but DJ is being held out for the moment.  I don’t know if it’s due to injury, illness, grades, or if he’s found his way into the dog house.

Tough timing for DJ. Very tough. I hope he can work through whatever is going on quickly.

I guess we’ve scared off all the insiders except for biscuits.  I posted this in the other scrimmage thread but DJ is being held out for the moment.  I don’t know if it’s due to injury, illness, grades, or if he’s found his way into the dog house.  Jboy listed a couple guys that stood out on his Twitter.  Duke the scoop is supposed to have a pod out soon with some inside info on the scrimage.  He listed Steiner at linebacker and my 90s wrestling brain immediately thinks of the Steiner brothers.

Ive also seen a couple people say Brandon Council is playing lights out which will help keep Bro at right tackle

What is it with RBs and the dog house at AU in the past 6-7 years? Feel like every RB but Kerryon has taken a trip there..

My theory is not based on any insider information is Kerryon did everything well including the blocking assignments. A lot of HS RB's didn't do much other than run in HS so sometimes he takes a little Doghouse time to make them understand they need to be a complete back run, block catch. Again my opinion not based on any knowledge.

I believe DJ's issue is health-related, but I could be wrong. Either way, you're right, it seems like it's been a common thing. Seems that way with WRs, too.

#1 - I am not implying that DJ has an issue or not.  But this brings up a question I have....

Is this a personality thing with skill positions?  Most come out of high school as top dog on campus and show up to AU as another Joe.  Again, DEFINITELY not implying this is case with DJ.  I do agree that it seems like we have a couple of rooms reserved in the dog house for RB and WRs.

It seems less pronounced with RBs, but it's hard to look at the NFL and not see a correlation between being a high performing WR or DB and certain mercurial tendencies. It's been posited that the nature of their positions- essentially spending every snap out on an island in a 1-on-1 matchup- dictates that they have to have a different mindset. (I would also offer that a WR can't catch a ball unless one is thrown somewhere near him, thus making him perhaps more dependent upon the rest of the team for his own personal success than other players are, but I don't know that that's very influential in how they approach the game.)

But it would also make sense that RBs would bring a different attitude to the locker room. Let's face it. RBs are only behind QBs on the football rock star totem pole. They sell jerseys and they're the only guys besides QBs who win Heismans and they get taken first in fantasy drafts.

How it is or isn't different with our program, I'm not sure. I do sense a particular vibe in the receiver room since Gus has been here, but I think that's changing as of right now.

Sincerely,
Guy that wants to acknowledge your well-worded post and engage but who isn't sure he's got a point of his own

stolen from the rant so take it with a grain. i have no idea who dukes is but........

Per Dukes.

Pappoe is looking like a freak and laying some wood.

Newkirk and Trusdale and D. Hall have been impress on the Dline. Hall is playing both sides Buck and SDE.

Sherwood is an NFL guy

Steiner is wide open and looks good

Tanner Dean is surprisingly good at LB for a walk-on

Jones looks good on the Oline

Brandon Council looks real good and has some dawg in him. He showed up from that small ball college like he was coming from Notre Dame or something.

Pegues is legit 300lbs and can move

All RBs look good. Worm has bulked up. MAR looks good running routes and catching passes.

Gonna need a little more pessimistic salt to go with all that pepper.

MY MAN CRUSH

Steiner being too aggressive is alright by me (better than the opposite) he'll curb it with time.

Regarding Joiner a little more, the knock on him coming out of high school was that there were issues with him not liking and heavily avoiding contact. At his size it was a head scratching thing to hear. But there might have been some validity; otherwise his measurable would make him an easy RB1 choice.

Definitely easier to teach restraint than aggression.  He’s just playing like a freshman and Twill will get that corrected.  Crazy how far the LBs have come since 2015-2016 when Auburn started to right the ship defensively.  Even with Tubs best teams I can’t remember having this kind of depth.  Garner does a great job at Dline and Pogue is potentially bringing Crazy talent at DB.  Give Bicknell another year and you’ve got crazy depth across the board.

I hope this philosophy is what now guides our offensive line recruiting. Because that position group has done more than any other to prove it true since 2014.

I don't know if @bigbird completely agrees with that but he's definitely influenced my thoughts on it.

Owen Pappoe not going into too much detail but saying watch out for this new offense.  I hope the offense can get it down enough to have UK and UGA say the same thing in a couple weeks.

Poor Arky.  They have been used and abused by Auburn and Auburn coach’s agents since Tubs.  I’m of the opinion they should have given Chad one more year to rebuild the team from what Bert left but I also understand getting rid of a coach that gets thumped by 2 blah teams.

I mean... 2 years without a single conference win... and their opponents in the East were Vandy, Kentucky and Mizzoo twice...
