I haven't heard much about him, so I would think that Auburn is in great position here? I would certainly love to be wrong about that...

No. UGA has led throughout and Ole Miss is making a run now.

The one good thing is that UGA leads for too many DE types IYAM. There are a few of these guys like Patrick. Fast, rangy, WDE types of kids are popping up all over. Kids like Kennion from last class. Who would be playing Basketball except there are so few scholarships available. They might not be LeBron James, but they are strong and fast and not afraid of contact.

Interesting. Dixie it is almost like you have a masters degree in college recruits. Impressive!

All WDE types should of course sign with Auburn.

I'm not familiar with any other uses of that acronym that would fit this context. Whole Disk Encryption? Wyoming Dept of Education? Web Design Enabled? Worst Defense Ever?

I would note, we don't flip our DEs according to the strong/weakside of the formation so that's not really a relevant distinction in this defense. A defensive end is a defensive end. Everyone is expected to pass rush and anchor against the run. That's why all our current guys have similar builds (Owens: 6'2" 259; Lawson: 6'2" 261; Daniel: 6'2" 263... although he's actually bigger than that; Dee Ford: 6'2" 252 at the combine).

The guys we just signed are "rangier" (read: taller), but if they can't play run and pass, they'll never start for Ellis Johnson. He doesn't play a lot of one-trick ponies. Tubby did. We had specialists on the edge. Eddins and Langenfeld were run stoppers. Groves and McClover were pass rushers, etc. That's just not the design of this defense where the DE could be on the strong or weak side each down depending solely on the offensive alignment.

Patrick fits our mold for DEs.

We can only play two DE's at one time. We signed four last year. How many do you guys think we should sign this time?

How many LB's do we play? :-X

I think we should sign 2-3. You can't assume all 3 incoming freshmen are ready for a big role next year, and you have to assume Lambert or Daniel gets shifted inside after we lose four senior DTs. With Owens graduating, it won't be a deep position next year. Two minimum. Three is ideal. Four if one is a clear swing player that could move inside (ala Daniel).

The recruiting services use WDE as a distinction so I would say that makes it pretty darn relevant. Trends come and go, but my point was that there are more of these kids now taking a look at playing football. Everyone wants the "Fast Twitch" muscle types. And while length is not a must, it certainly doesn't hurt. Lastly, we will recruit players who are as versatile as possible. But if a kid is born to rush the QB, take him. He can be taught to defend the run. It is much tougher to take a natural run stuffer, and make him into a QB killer IMHO.

I agree with this.

Well that all depends on if you believe our current ends are all SEC caliber. :)

I'm ok with only taking 2 DEs in this class. Drew Williams is the only freshman I see in CRG's 3 deep next year. I think Thornton and Kennion will RS to build mass. Lambert is likely to only play DE on 3rd and long downs. Even if Daniel moves to DT there are still a number of schollied kids at DE for 2015. There will be 7 schollied DEs plus walk on Chase Robison who may go on scholly at any point. Bring in 2 this year and you have 9-10 on scholly for 2015. CRG typically wants to use 6-7 in rotation.

I think the important thing is quality over quantity. I'm ok with 2 DE's if they are elite prospects. We finally have our numbers where they need to be, we're developing talent and depth, and we're in on some very elite prospects. It's time for us to start being very patient and selective on who we sign.

Exactly! If it's cool to sign 4 DE's, then it's cool to sign 4 LB's. Glad someone took the bait.

We lost 4 DE's last year. We didn't lose 4 LB's

We didn't have 4 LB to lose because we don't have the quality numbers needed. We are getting there though!

We signed 4 DE's to compensate for losing 4 DE's

We signed 2 LB's because of the 8 we had on the roster last year 1 left.

I can't wait for Tre Williams Ito hit the field. It is not easy for a true freshman to play LB in the SEC. I think Tre will see the field some.
