Ellis Johnson out as Auburn Defensive coordinator

I wonder how Gus will tolerate Muschamp standing next to him screaming 'kill that mfer'.

Lunatic doesn't work as a head coach, but it's perfectly fine for a DC.

Indeed. And what makes people think our other assistant coaches don't curse like a sailor? It would be an embarrassment that because our HC doesn't curse, that he would censor his assistants too.

They probably try to control themselves around him but he doesn't strike me as the type to try and censor them. He's been around long enough to have been around plenty of coaches who will let some expletives deleted fly.

Probably a dumb statement but I don't think an assistant coach from Memphis fits the bill when there is so much riding on this hire and there are others more qualified. Then again that assumes Auburn can attract who they want.

Malzahn was at a C-USA school when hired by Chizik.

Yeah, but Gus was at Arkansas as OC prior to his time at Tulsa and probably would have stayed at Arkie a little longer if he and Nutt-job didn't have a falling out.

One season and was handcuffed by the Nutt. Also, only hired to get Mustain's sig on NLI.

Boom makes me a little nervous. I'm not sure his ego will be comfortable taking a step back just yet. the last thing AU needs is more turmoil. The defense needs stability.

If he's willing to talk with Gus about being the DC rather than sit out a year and wait for a HC job to open up, I'd say his ego will handle it fine. Losing as a HC has a way of keeping an ego in check.

After the headaches he's had being "the guy", I think he might enjoy just coaching.

But maybe not at Auburn. Who knows what his state of mind is at this time? I like him and I'd be happy with the hire if he comes in with a sincere desire to be a DC.

There's a lot to that. Being the HC is a huge responsibility and getting back to your roots, as it were, can be a very good thing.

Auburn: According to Auburn Undercover, defensive coordinator / linebackers coach Ellis Johnson has been dismissed. According to AL.com, the school will owe Johnson nearly $2.2 million. Two names to keep an eye on are former Florida head coach Will Muschamp and Memphis defensive coordinator / safeties coach Barry Odom. Keep track of open FBS assistant jobs here.

Who knows anything about Barry Odom?

He gets my vote. No baggage...

I know him well. I played for him in high school when he was the head coach. He is a no nonsense guy. Very fundamental. He is awesome in my opinion. He will be a big name in coaching in a few years

Whoever we hire, he better bring some DB's with him! Go ahead and bring a couple pass rush DE's too!

Oh trust me, the recruits will be knocking on our doors from now on

We'll see come February. I hope you are right.

Just sit back and enjoy

What makes you think that?

What makes you think that?

2 things: Hate to bring these guys name up, but foster and evans saw ellis as their grandpa figure, not appealing to them as a coach. 2nd thing is my connection is telling me I will be happy, from what he has been told, my fingers and toes are crossed! And as always, it is great 2b an AU Tiger!! WDE

Not a popular name but I like John Tenuta from Virginia. Top 30 total defense. I watched their game Friday night and thought the defense played smart, fundamental football.

Muschamp will not be our next DC. JJ doesn't like him.

Muschamp was the one that held hard feelings over how he perceived himself being treated. JJ is not going to try and overrule Gus on his choice of assistant coaches.

JJ doesn't need to "try" as he is Gus' boss! And Gus is no dummy, he won't go there on Muschamp. Don't get me wrong I would love to see Will back at AU but it's not going to happen.

Well said.

Muschamp knows two speeds - full out and hair on fire. He can learn a great deal from Gus about how to temper the energy and focus on maturing without losing the fire. Then he can be a candidate for a HC position after the next two NC's.

Interesting, I will have to look into him. I know nothing about him.

I wonder back to the Whitehead incident and if that might have been the start of some of this. Did CEJ and CGM not see eye-to-eye on it and CEJ was keeping JW off the field and CGM finally had enough and put him in during the TAM game to try and stop the bleeding. Maybe Gus was making some thoughts back then.

Doesn't matter as CEJ is out. Muschamp, Shannon, Odom --- others???

Again with the declarative statements and zilch to back it up.

JJ did not have a beef with Muschamp. Muschamp did have a beef with Tim Jackson and by extension, JJ but it was 8 years ago. These are grown men. If Gus feels Muschamp is the right guy for us now, JJ's not going to veto it.

If im not mistaken, cooper had over 200 yards against fla this year. So, is that the coach or the players?

Yep, but u left out that the defense scored 2tds in that game. With our offense, that game gets ugly by halftime! And the toothless ones start exiting the stadium in a hurry

Some guys are almost unstoppable. Cooper is one of them.

He is, but Bama did put 672 yards on Florida.

Just my opinion, but I think Gus did a good job coming in and hiring a group of older, well respected coaches and they did a good job getting these guy's confidence back. Problem is that this older group may be falling behind times a little, especially with the HUNH offenses. I think the last straw for Gus was CEJ's decision to cover Cooper one on one. He said it before the game but I did not think he would follow through, but he did. While we had more passing yards than them, it was hard earned. Our guys were making catches under tight coverage. Cooper on the other hand was usually wide open with several yards of separation. I think we have talent and did better against the run, the passing defense went farther south this year over last. I think CEJ's decision last night cost him the immediate decision. Gus does not want to call the defense but he will hold his DC responsible for the outcome. While there may be some truth to the fact that the offense should have scored 70 instead of 44, that is a far cry from a defense that allows 55 points. Gus is doing what he should, CEJ is a good man and he knows that he has not met expectations. That's why they get paid big money. WDE

CEJ quals for a AL State pension this year or next. He is set for life.

The iron bowl was the final straw, but having to score 60 to beat Missouri last year is unacceptable as well.

As I've said last year, he cost us the natty IMO. As a matter of fact, he has never been a natty champ def coach. Hate it for him, but he is financially set, so he will be ok

CEJ quals for AL State a Retirement either this year or next.

JMHO but if Gus goes after someone like Muschamp that means he is truly planning to be here for the long haul. Also if Will co0mes to AU I think some defense recruits switch from Florida to AU. WDE

Gus is going to get whoever he wants. If JJ were to overrule him on that Gus would be talking to JJs' boss and JJ would be out the door. JJ has made some questionable decisions but he isn't that petty or stupid.

Unless you are in the athletic department with first hand knowledge there's no way you can know that. You have nothing to back this statement up but hot air.

"Muschamp would wake up the monster. The same monster that has competed for two national championships since 2010 with defenses that were far from stellar."
