Aufan59 0
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/dec/18/obesity-can-be-disability-eu-court-rules In Europe, the sin of gluttony can now potentially get you disability benefits and protections. If this happens in America, will we continue the good fight against government sponsoring and protecting people who sin?

Mims44 1,544
I could have sworn this was already a thing in the US. Are we sure there's no such thing as an obesity disability here already?
quietfan 233
Our government neither sponsors, protects, condemns, or even acknowledges "sin". It is forbidden to do so by the 1st Amendment which forbids the government from recognizing any religion. And one has to recognize a particular religious belief in order to recognize the concept of "sin", much less to identify specific sins. The government does, however, have a duty to "establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, ... promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity". Sometimes that means protecting freedoms that a particular religion may consider "sin"; sometimes that means prohibiting actions that some religion might endorse as appropriate or righteous. As for obesity or gluttony as far as any governmental response: If there is an organic problem, it should be treated/handled just like any other physical ailment: diabetes, cancer, heart disease, lupus, hypertension, etc. If the cause is an addiction problem, it should be address like any other addiction, drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc. Finally, any definition of "obesity" should be based on the health effects (physical and psychological) of one's weight, certainly not mere aesthetics or a media/social perception of 'attractiveness'.
