My point in my post was that many people wouldn't want to live by OT law and you can't just pick out one verse and claim it while ignoring others in the same book. FTR, again, Christians no longer abide by OT law but rather the NT covenant. OT law was harsh and unforgiving, the NT covenant is based in mercy and forgiveness.

I saw it as providing a rationale for dismissing the passage regarding treatment of refugees because said passage was in the Old Testament.

What am I getting wrong?

I don't see where it's relevant to the discussion to say many people would not want to abide by other instructions in the Old Testament - which are inane.

The question concerns this particular one.  Does it provide instruction for modern Christians or not?

Is your question, does the passage that Red quoted provide instruction for modern Christians? If so then the answer is no, because that commandment is based on the OT law. As modern christians, we do not subscribe to OT law. One of these verses would be more applicable

As far as I am concerned this is a Talmudic distinction.  Especially since we seem to agree on the substantive point that compassion toward refugees is a Christian principle.
