To extend on your comment about AU being behind the ball.

Get this $#!t..........uat had 4 guys that signed yesterday, they were immediately on campus and on the practice field with the team yesterday......another 14 (FOURTEEN) of their early signees will be on campus in January for a total of 18 (EIGHTEEN) early enrollees/signees on campus, getting acclimated, in the weight room, watching film on their own, participating in practices with the rest of the team and learning the "Process".

Talk about being behind the ball - my God! 😲

Taking it a step further, the schools that locked down most of their signees yesterday, can devote full time and attention to next years class, getting a jump on us as we spend all of our time trying to close out this year’s class. It’s a cycle we are in that we really need to get out of.

We cannot get out of this cycle until we provide a more consistent product on the field.

It is an AU thing that started back with Tubby tho he was lucky enough to avoid competing against Saban.  Gus will have a good year, get a raise and we say there is stability.  Then Gus will follow up with a stinker yr and we want to fire him.

Just food for thought...but Ole Miss has 28, Southern Miss 26, Nebraska 25, Arky 27, Vandy 23.....so having a winning history is not necessarily related to filling your quota it seems.....and meanwhile Ohio State has 16,  WVa 16, AU 17 and Penn State and Northwester.......and there is Louisville with 5 or so.   And of course you can do like OM, you can fill up on 3* players hoping to find some diamonds in the rough.

The big issue in my mind is that the rich got richer....trend has been in that direction for quite a while and unfortunately I don't see it changing.  Only five of the top 20 are not the "state name" university....AU being among them....

So the new limit is 30? I thought 28 was it.

28 is an old rule. The new rule for signees is just like for enrollies. The max per year is 25 period. If you sign under 25 for a year. then that many December signees can count back to the previous year's 25 limit til you reach 25 signees, up to 5. For example, If you sign 19 in the previous year then you have short changed yourself. You can still only have 5 of the December signees count to the previous year. In that scenario you could only sign 24 for the previous year.

Yes they get a jump but we aren't spending all our time on 2019. We are still looking forward to 2020 as well as evidenced by a JR day typically the last weekend before NSD.

Okay, so substitute ‘a lot of our time’ for ‘all of our time’. Point still stands that we will have 2019 and 2020 to work on instead of just 2020.

Because Bama retools with nearly all high schoolers while AU has to round out classes with transfer & Grad transfers. What you don't see on a list like this is all those dad gum transfers & Grad transfers AU has brought on in recent years. They don't show up on recruiting sites but they count just the same in the NCAA.'s eyes. Most teams bring in 25 new players every year. When you see a team signing more than 25 it's because they didn't bring in 25 the previous year & are having some January enrollies in the next class fill up the previous 26 limit. Some teams, like Bama, replenish the losses with nearly all high school kids. Other schools, like AU, have to finish off the yearly 25 limit, with transfers & Grad Transfers due to unnecessary holes brought on by poor roster management & in some cases development. This pretty much cancels out the rest of the question in the 2nd paragraph of the OP.

We have had a high rate of attrition in recent years. We acquire the talent to fill unnecessary holes as stated above but some each class are transfers & Grad Transfers. Hope that clears things up @AUTiger03.

The main part of the problem Gus has and won't address. His roster management is as bad as any coach AU has ever had.

So, the number of "count backs" changed from three to five. Total from 28 to 30. Got it!

In what respect? Our attrition rate is right in there with all the other Power 5 schools. So what is he doing wrong that others are doing right?

Look at the glaring holes the team always seem to have. If it isn't the LBers it's the OL. It's the RB's, the WR's. Always chasing his tail to fill holes. Year to year. Even Stevie Wonder can see this. Sure there will be problems crop up now and then. But not every year. It has be a huge problem and it shouldn't.

Gus has to start listening to his own people. Maybe he will start.

There was actually not a limit of count backs  in terms of players enrolled on scholly.til the last rules change last April. The old rule from around 2011 to about 2015 was you could sign 28 kids every year but could only enroll 25.

Why would Gus need to listen to other people? He's been in CFB almost as long as Montavious Atkinson.

Getting a 7-8 month jump on the competition by bringing in early signees/enrollees is invaluable, to already have 70% of your total signing class on campus/in weight training/on a nutrition plan, etc. before the standard NSD in February is effing SAVAGE.

This is just another way NS takes a rule change (he didn't want an early signing period at all) and uses it to his advantage.

Saban maybe acted like he didn’t want it, but I remember years ago him saying football needed an early signing period. Matter of fact, I chuckled when it came to fruition thinking about his previous comments.
