I love Coach G. Think he is a great recruiter. I just wonder sometimes about his actual coaching abilities. I know that sounds insane, but hear me out. The guys who have been successful under G were huge recruits coming out of high school. Lawson, Mon Adams, Jeff Holland, Nick Coe, Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown.

These guys were solid and improved while they were here, but none of them by leaps and bounds. None of them became game changer caliber like a Nick Fairley or Q. Groves (arguably Holland was close in 2017).

We have also yet to see Coach G take a nobody and make them a somebody. It all leads me to believe the guy isn't a great developer. And I wonder if the drill sergeant stuff is a factor.

Ass chewing is fine. But I think the forever-disappointed stuff brings negative energy. I've noticed whenever Coach G or his linemen are quoted in an article, it always sounds like they are all in trouble. "Marlon hasn't been listening to G. Moultry knows better than what he has been doing. Big Kat needs to come on." Etc. Always heard that with Byron.

Wouldn't trade Coach G. And don't blame him for Byron being a bust. But I feel like G's style may need some updating to elevate these kids' level of play.

It seems like discussing CRG with anything less than pure praise is akin to touching the 3rd rail.  That being said, I think he's starting to fall off as a recruiter.  He's pulled in some decent talent but not near enough of it and not anything approaching elite. I think he was elite for a portion of his career but I don't think anyone would be calling him elite now if he hadn't played at AU.  We could find someone better as an overall evaluator/recruiter/developer.

2019 Class:  No interior linemen, possibly one of the 2 commits grows into an inside linemen.  2 DL in a class is not cutting it either way. 0 WDE/Buck target

SDE - Charles Moore - ****
SDE - Jaren Handy - ****

2018 Class: Not an awful class but only 3 DL signed with only 1 WDE/Buck target.

DT - Coynis Miller - ****
DT - Daquan Newkirk (JUCO) - ****
WDE/Buck - Caleb Johnson - ***

2017 Class: Signed 2 high potential WDE/Bucks, but only 1 DT once you factor in Jackson moving to OL because he didn't possess an SEC DT skillset. In effect only 3 DL signed.

DT - Tyrone Truesdell - ***
DT - Alec Jackson (moved to OL) - ***
WDE/Buck - TD Moultry - ****
WDE - BK Bryant - ****

2016 Class: Arguably Rodney's best class with a lot of interior talent.  Again however, no pass rushing threats.

DT - Derrick Brown - *****
DT - Antwuan Jackson - ****
DT - Tashawn Manning - ***
SDE - Marlon Davidson - ****
SDE - Prince Sammons  (moved to OL) - ****
SDE - Nick Coe - ****

2015 Class: Overall a weak class, not a single contributor at DL among them.

DT - Jauntavius Johnson - ***
DT - Maurice Swain - ***
SDE - Byron Cowart - *****
SDE - Tega Wanogho - (moved to OL) - ****

2014 Class: Just an atrocious job of evaluation.  Looked great on paper but only produced 1 significant contributor in the group.

DT - Dontavious Russell - ****
DT - Devaroe Lawrence - ***
SDE - DaVonte Lambert - ****
WDE - Justin Thornton - ****
WDE - Andrew Williams - ****
WDE - Raashed Kennion - ****

2013 Class:  Not going to judge or comment as this was a transition year.

DT - Montravius Adams - *****
DT - Ben Bradley (JUCO) - ****
SDE - Elijah Daniel - ****
WDE - Carl Lawson - ****

I think a lot of what you said in that post might have merit. RG was probably coached that way. He also has had some success coaching that way so if it works on one he may think it works on everyone. Not true of course but he may not know another way. Everyone responds to that type of coaching or leadership but the way they respond is the difference. Some people respond to critical analysis as a call to step up, others just retreat and deflect. I wish Cowart well.

Don’t forget folks CRG always said the player had it in him but he had to reach down from within and do it. Unfortunately it took leaving AU for him to really decide to put in the effort. Not CRGs fault at all . In fact I bet someday Byron calls ( May have already) coach RG and thanks him for The kick in the butt.

Not every teenager responds to the crg style of coaching.  That’s not good or bad - it’s just what it is.  Other kids respond to a more positive reinforcement.  Some kids won’t reach their full potential with that style either.

i wish cowart found his peak while at auburn but it didn’t work.  Good for him to have kept with it.

I see this thread was moved.  Makes sense.

Question though....

When did New England become Auburn's rival?

It's hard enough watching the Tigers navigate LSU, uat & thUga every year.  They don't have to play the Patriots now do they?!?!

Dee Ford?

He came in in 2013. I don't think RG deserves credit for catching Dee at the tail end. However, it may have been RG that got him to the next level. Who knows?

Why did you skip Derick Hall and Colby Wooden?

I didn't mean to.  I guessed I missed them when looking at the 247 class listings.  My point still stands though, the "elite recruiting" under CRG meme is not based on reality.

What strikes me about Coach G is he seems to motivate with negativity. May not sound like a big deal but it is. It's the difference between playing to win (for a positive) vs. playing NOT to lose (trying to avoid a negative).

I think there have actually been studies done that show positively motivated athletes perform better than negative ones (it's common sense, but I think there's actual science on it now).
