Auburn gymnastics adds three to the 2024 roster

https://auburntigers.com/news/2023/4/28/gymnastics-auburn-gymnastics-adds-three-to-the-2024-roster.aspx

AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn gymnastics team will add three more to the 2024 freshman class, head coach Jeff Graba announced Friday.

Coming to the Plains next year will be Emma Grace Boyd (Windermere, Florida), Sophia Greaves (Staten Island, New York) and Paige Zancan (Mt. Airy, Maryland).

The three will join Bryn Bartman, Julianne Huff and Lyden Saltness to make up next season's freshmen.

"We are so excited to have these three join our team," Graba said. "This will give us one of the best, and most well-rounded, recruiting classes that we've had in recent memory. I'm really looking forward to seeing what these three can do for Auburn gymnastics!"

EMMA GRACE BOYD
Hometown: Windermere, Fla.
High School: Olympia
Gym: Orlando Metro

HIGHLIGHTS: 2021 and 2023 Level 10 Development Program National Championship qualifier … State and regional champion on bars and beam in 2021 … Top five finishes on bars, beam and in the all-around at the 2023 State Championship.

GRABA THOUGHTS: "Emma Grace is known for her bars and beam but will definitely be an option on all four events. She comes from a premier gymnastics program and brings a lot of high-level competition experience with her. It will be exciting to watch her develop and contribute through the years."

SOPHIA GREAVES
Hometown:
Staten Island, N.Y.
High School: St. Joseph by the Sea
Gym: Athletic Edge

HIGHLIGHTS: 2022 Level 10 Development Program National Championship qualifier … Multiple top finishes on bars and beam throughout her career.

GRABA THOUGHTS: "Sophia's athletic talent is unquestionable. She comes to us with bars and beam as her priorities, but we have high hopes for her to work all four events. Her potential is enormous, and it'll be fun to watch her progress."

PAIGE ZANCAN
Hometown:
Mt. Airy, Md.
High School: Damascus
Gym: Hill's Gymnastics

HIGHLIGHTS: Five-time Level 10 Development Program National Championship qualifier … 2019 National Floor Champion … 2023 Region 7 Champion on beam, floor and the all-around … 2021 Region 7 Champion on floor and the all-around.

GRABA THOUGHTS: "Paige is a tremendously powerful athlete, and she has been successful at the highest levels of our sport. We are lucky to have her joining our team and can't wait to get her on campus. She should be an all-around asset to this team."

Way-too-early college gymnastics power rankings for 2024

https://www.ncaa.com/news/gymnastics-women/article/2023-04-24/way-too-early-college-gymnastics-power-rankings-2024

Taking into consideration the 2023 season, departing routines, newcomers, the coaching carousel, and everything else the offseason has to offer, here’s a way-too-early look at the top 20 teams for the 2024 season. Any eligible athletes who hadn’t declared a COVID season before publishing were considered losses.

No. 1 Oklahoma

The Sooners’ dynasty isn’t stopping anytime soon, as Oklahoma graduates only a few routines and reloads with a top-10 recruiting class. Losing Olivia Trautman stings, but with her injuries, the Sooners have already successfully navigated life without her before. Now, they have even more routines to play with. The No. 4 overall recruit Hannah Schieble and U.S. international elite Addison Fatta are more than capable of filling the vacated lineup spots, while incomer Keira Wells’ Yurchenko one and a half is so stellar, it may be an upgrade from the departing NCAA vault champions’. Yes, it’s that good. Oklahoma will be the favorite to three-peat in 2024.

No. 2 Florida

There’s no way to replace Trinity Thomas — new record-holder for most perfect 10s in a career — but luckily for the Gators, they have some practice managing her absence as they navigated her injuries much of her last two years. Florida gets a big lift next year with the reclassification of five-star recruit Danielle Ferris to the 2023 recruiting class, as she’s a college-ready all arounder who can make an immediate impact. Four-star recruit Anya Pilgrim holds plenty of potential, particularly on the leg events, while fellow four-star Alyssa-Carolina Arana is Pilgrim’s perfect compliment as someone who could make late lineups on bars and beam. But all eyes will be on Leanne Wong, who has plans to make a run for the Paris Olympics. Will she depart from college to train like Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles or try to top an NCAA and Olympic podium in the same year?

No. 3 Utah

No. 4 California

No. 5 LSU

It was an improbable run to Four on the Floor after a season plagued by injuries, but a run nonetheless, and the Tigers are fortunate to retain all but a few routines heading into 2024. The dynamic duo of Haleigh Bryant and Aleah Finnegan remain and may be the strongest all around pair in the country, while LSU also brings in a healthy recruiting class of three, four, and five-star gymnasts. U.S. elites Amari Drayton and Zoe Miller may defer to try and qualify for Paris, but with the core of the roster returning, the Tigers have the pieces to fight for a program-first NCAA title.

No. 6 UCLA

No. 7 Michigan

No. 8 Alabama

Despite a stacked roster, it was a slow start to the Ashley Johnston era at her alma mater as the Crimson Tide were eliminated pre-nationals as the loser of a tough eight vs. nine-seed regionals bout. Without any COVID announcements yet, Alabama is set to graduate a lot of significant routines. But, in typical Alabama fashion, it’s reloading with a top-five recruiting class. No. 1 overall recruit Jamison Sears provides plenty of power to the SEC, while fellow five-star Chloe LaCoursiere has the technique on bars to warrant perfect 10s from the get-go. It may take time to adjust to new faces at the end of lineups, but the Crimson Tide will always be a threat.

No. 9 Michigan State

No. 10 Kentucky

Powered by superstar Raena Worley, it was thrilling to see Kentucky capitalize on one of its best rosters to earn a trip to championships and secure a program-best finish. Now, with double-digit routines likely departing, the Wildcats will have to rebuild and reload as they fight to stay in the nationals picture. Five-star recruit Delaynee Rodriguez highlights a large recruiting class that also features four-star Cadence Gormley, a pair that can not only fill in lineup holes but boost bars and beam totals. But you can never count Kentucky out, as it always stays relevant exactly when you think it may have a down year.

No. 11 Auburn

Sunisa Lee’s unfortunate early end to her final NCAA season showed just how difficult it will be for Auburn to move forward without the Olympic all around champion, as its 24th-place finish is not indicative of what she helped the program accomplish during her time there. Furthermore, the Tigers are also losing Derrian Gobourne — a fixture and face of the team for more than double Lee’s time, bringing plenty of positive attention to the team. Head coach Jeff Graba’s most arduous task moving forward will be maintaining the hype surrounding the program with those two absent. Still, five-star recruit Julianne Huff and four-star recruit Lyden Saltness should help keep Auburn relevant with their legit talent.

Unfortunately in gymnastics, the hype results in higher scores. Seems like a big chasm at the scoring table between the Top 3 and anybody else. Losing Suni late in the campaign was not recoverable, so I am hopeful that the team is in a better place now that they will have time to prepare without her.

I think the upcoming season is going to be a rebuilding year for us. We simply won't be able to replace Suni & Derrian. Sophia Groth was mostly injured and experienced sophomore blues last year but she should be able to be a team leader this upcoming season. Incoming freshman, 5-star Julianne Huff should make an immediate impact. Hopefully, Olivia Greaves can stay healthy because we need her gymnastics. I am glad that Cassie Stevens, Aria Brusch, and Olivia Hollingsworth are back, they are very experienced.

However, I am really excited about the next years. We have 5-star Olivia Ahern coming in after the Olympic year + senior int elites Marissa Neal and Katelyn Jong along with 4-star Sophia Bell (what a great recruiting class). The current cycle should be very comparable talent-wise, should we land 5-star Avery King along with committed senior elite Charlotte Booth and 4-star commits Norah Christian and Brynn Torry.

This could be our 2026 team:

[4-star Sophia Groth - not sure about eligibility]

5-star Olivia Ahern (L10)

5-star Julianne Huff (elite/L10)

5-star Olivia Greaves (sr int elite)

5-star Avery King (sr elite) ??? not yet committed

4-star Katelyn Jong (sr int elite)

4-star Charlotte Booth (sr int elite)

4-star Marissa Neal (sr elite)

4-star Sophia Bell (L10)

4-star Norah Christian (sr elite)

4-star Brynn Torry (sr elite)

All of a sudden, we might be cooking.  Since the bar routine last week by Greaves, we've averaged over 9.875 per routine.  Continues on vault tonight which is by far our weakest.  3, maybe 4 stuck landings and a 49.500 Vault!!!

Season highs on 3 events. Opened with big lead, basically wiped out the lead after a mediocre bars, then just blasted Bama afterwards.  Paige (freshman) opened beam with 9.925! And the other freshman filling in for Huff on floor with a solid 9.90. 49.500 vault

49.225 bars

49.450 beam

49.525 floor!!

Wow 👌

Another great AU crowd for the UA meet. Indeed one of  the senior UA gymnasts acknowledged and commented on how much she has enjoyed coming to AU to compete in front of energized and enthusiastic AU fans. The implication is that the Coleman crowd offers less energy and enthusiasm for UA gymnastics than that afforded the AU team in Neville. The UF girls and coach also echoed the outstanding environment and support for gymnastics at Neville. Real compliments for the AU fans.  WDE!

One interesting tidbit .. Ashley Johnston, the UA coach and former AU assistant for 4 years, one-upped the gymnasties by placing her team in front of them during the floor routine.  Her team was supporting the gymnast routine in a more pleasant way than the crowd lol.  Clever move but I hope others don't follow suit now.

Auburn score was 2nd for the week behind Florida (LeAnn Wong scored a 10 on bars and nearly another on floor)

This is a great win - esp with a younger team against an experienced opponent...

Next season we will add some serious elite talent to the team (Olivia Ahern, Sophia Bell, Anna Flynn Cashion, Katelyn Jong, and Marissa Neal)... + Olivia Greaves is also contributing now...

I expected a rebuilding year but this is a pretty solid year for us.

I am wondering how much Sara Carver-Milne is a factor here.

SEC: I read that Konnor is a walk-on at LSU? I guess she is an "NIL walk-on"...

Imagine the score of we had been more like our average on bars.  Vault is considered our weakest by far.  We usually never stick a landing on vault this year and we stuck 3!  That's usually the thing that's missing.  We then didn't stick many on bars where we are usually better.  I like this team.  Trying to find that identity.  Cassie stepped up.  She had a legit AA threat for Bama and finished 9.90 and better on all 4, including the near 10.

Looks like OliviaH still has some eligibility left and could return for a final year.

Maybe she will decide to defer med school. We need some senior leadership next year.

Meanwhile Suni...
