Penny's tenure at Memphis

Recommended Posts

Has mostly featured a bunch of big talk, with only middling results. They lost to a bad Wichita State team today, likely knocking them out of the NCAA tournament.

Seems the experiment with hiring a bunch of ex players a few years ago has failed pretty badly. Howard at Michigan is probably in trouble, Stackhouse is out, and Penny can't be too far behind.

I saw yesterday where, in 6 years, Penny has accomplished the following:

2 NCAA tournament appearances

1 NCAA tournament win

0 regular season conference titles

1 conference tournament title

At a program like Memphis, if he weren't such a beloved hometown hero, Penny would have been fired a couple of years ago. When they hired him, many Tiger fans were expecting a run of Calipari era-like dominance at Memphis. It's obvious by now that will never happen under Penny's watch.

Thats not a good stretch for Memphis. When he couldn't capitalize on that great initial signing class you had to know it wasn't going to get better. Can't just attract talented players at this level. Got to coach em up as well.

Don't forget Kenny Payne at Louisville. He was fired a couple days ago after winning only 5 ACC conference games in 2 seasons and lost every conference game that was on the road. He played on the 1986 Louisville team that won the national title. Pervis Ellison was on that same team and he was an absolute monster at Louisville.
