First he caused a war. Then he destroyed New Orleans with his powerful hurricane machine. Now he's causing kids to stop reading.

Little reading didn't hurt Bush's career

A recent story in FLORIDA TODAY bemoaned the fact that students are reading less than before.

This is a genuine concern, because reading is the backbone of all learning and progress.

Certainly some of the blame for this unfortunate situation can be lain at the feet of television, computers, and electronic gadgets such as cell phones.

Little has been said, however, about another likely reason for reading's decline.

For more than six years, this nation has had a president who by his own admission, does little reading beyond his morning briefing papers.

Well, that's not being fair. He has also been known to read closed captions on Fox News and, with some difficulty, carefully crafted speeches.

Why bother with books and newsmagazines when a non-reader can make it to the summit of world power?
