Any experience with wireless G routers?

Recommended Posts

I'm about to setup a wireless G system in my place. We are currently running 802.11b but I want a little faster setup with a little more range.

Anyway, curious if anyone has had any experience with routers...good or bad. I've read so many reviews and it seems like everyone hates everything out there. I'm assuming a lot of this is due to user error...

But we got 3 laptops, 2 destkops and one server...Im sure it will come down to Dlink, Netgear, and Linksys...but I see microsoft has got a decent setup (here comes titan tiger now...screaming noooooo!) hehe.

any suggestions?

I think you will find the D-Link to have better range and bandwidth. I am currently using the Linksys stuff and find it acceptable, but not as good as the D-Link.

Net gear myself. Although I am very much against anything wireless. Just not enough COMPETENT security out there for me. I would run away from Microsoft unless you are a no skills person or a big fan of .net or passport. It would then be a little less buggy.

Basically, anything but Microsoft unless..., and then make sure you are 100% G. G is backward compatible to B. One B piece and the whole thing fails back to B. Enable the highest security offered on the system.

Wireless is crackable. B is almost guaranteed crackable in 2-3 days MAX, if there is even any WEP turned on. Personal experience says that about 80%+ have NO security turned on at all. Hackers and pedophiles cruise the neighborhood looking for stray signals. (Wardriving & WarChalking) If they are in your system, they are using your IP!!!!! Explain to the officer how it wasnt you down loading all that kiddie porn.

Anyway, turn on all the security AND make sure you reset the master user and password. You would not believe the IT Pros that screw that up alone. After you install, make sure that the boxes are not easily seen from road in the trash. Yes, they cruise looking for the stuff. Also, know who you are buying this stuff from. Heck, the salesman would be a likely perp in waiting. He knows exactly what he sold you....

DONT BE A VICTIM!

Although I haven't graduated up to the G yet, I've always felt Netgear was the best networking equipment for the price. I usually get info from this site (practicallynetworked.com) before I buy. They have opinions from users as well as their own reviews.

Linksys is cheap, and does the job but Netgear tends to have fewer problems. My router/firwall/hub, wap and wireless card are all Netgear. However, I think Linksys probably has a better interface for setting up. They have a complete browser based interface, and Netgear's is only partially browser based - you have to telnet into the device for advanced functions. That may have changed, but its the case with my stuff.

In any case, I don't think you'll go wrong with the three you listed.

I could tell you stories here. On one project last semester, one member of my team opened his biz laptop at home on Montesano. Found 10 B wireless LANs, only 1 had WEP enabled. Folks this is in the Rocket City of Huntsville in the wealthier part of town!

There was a guy arrested in Quebec recently (the article was recently deleted) going down a one way street the wrong way. He was jerking off to all the kiddie porn he just downloaded from some idiot's WLAN that had no security turned on. I hope to hell the Judge busted the WLAN owner's nuts too!

Guys, dont trust anyone on the net. I am basically convinced that Yahoo and AOL are now Perv magnets on the internet. WLANs are too easy and too susceptible to be safe. Your company installs $50k worth of optic cable, a $10K Double firewall DMZ, and spends tens of thousands more training everyone, then some idiot sets up a WLAN in the office that allows a hacker to get past all the other security in mere moments. Why bother wasting all the moiney on security if you are going to give a hacker a garage door opening to the good stuff anyway?

There are also stories out in the biz world where WLANS are being setup in office by workers and by hackers that enter the building, these "rogue" access points are popping up everywhere now too. IT folks are keeping a laptop with a wireless NIC card to just walk around the building sniffing for rogue access points.

First Rule of IT.....People are Stupid!

Second Rule of IT....People are Lazy!
