I'd imagine the coaching staff will start shifting its focus to the 2024 class soon.

@Win4AU Their focus hasn't ever left 2024 while adding these transfer pieces.

FSU is trying to sneak up and knock Georgia off their high horse this year. Same with USC. Should be an interesting season.

This is disappointing.

How so. He has on field talent but doesn't apparently fit our culture off the field.

What’s his problem off the field?

Freeze ‘real excited’ about North Texas transfers

LAGRANGE | Nothing like adding a little Mean Green to your roster in May.

Auburn signed two transfers from North Texas this week in wide receiver Jyaire Shorter and linebacker Larry Nixon III. Both could potentially step in as starters this fall.

"Jyaire Shorter, I think, is a deep ball threat,” said AU coach Hugh Freeze. “He’s proven he can go get the ball. He gives us some length and catch radius that we need for what we want to do offensively.

"Larry Nixon is a tackling machine. He was either All-CUSA or led Conference USA in tackles. It was above 100. I think he’s a great addition to us also. We’re real excited about both of those guys.”

Shorter caught 23 passes for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, averaging an FBS-best 27.2 yards per reception.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Shorter had four catches of more than 50 yards last season. Auburn’s receivers totaled just two in 2022, both by slot Ja’Varrius Johnson.

“I'd like to see that. I'll take that right now,” said Freeze of the explosive plays. “If we can get him 20 catches and 10 of them are touchdowns, that's pretty good. Hopefully we can get him more.

“I thought his explosive playmaking ability was impressive -- and maybe something we really don't have, or don't have proven yet at that outside position. You saw the film, too. He's got that capability, so now we just have to get him healthy and hopefully get some consistency and some of that playmaking that you see on field.”

The only concern with Shorter is a couple of season-ending injuries he suffered as a sophomore and junior.

“Those are the difficult deals in recruiting a kid for one week,” said Freeze. “Those are uncomfortable and you have to make a gut call on some of those. Obviously, he came on his official visit and went through everything with our docs. We obviously are optimistic and believe that he’ll be 100 percent.”

Nixon, 6-foot-2 and 236 pounds, finished fourth in CUSA with 106 tackles last season along with 2.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack.

He’s expected to compete at the Will linebacker position where he could potentially start alongside Ole Miss transfer Austin Keys, who is manning the Mike linebacker position.

“Just his passion, the way he ran to the football and the way he's a solid tackler,” said Freeze on what stands out about Nixon. “You just can't have enough of those guys. And I think he's going to come in and compete for a starting position -- I really do.”

Shorter and Nixon are scheduled to report to Auburn by May 30 along with most of AU’s remaining transfers and signees.

I'm not sure their is one. But that's what several on here think. Maybe he just wanted to play with a different QB. FSU has an established QB as well.

Not just an established QB. They have Jordan Travis. He's a top 5 QB in the country, behind such elite talent such as Caleb Williams, Drake May, and.....*checks notes* Bo Nix😶

No clue. Just seen a number of credible sources say he didn't fie with the culture Freeze wants and has established.

It's disappointing that he "doesn't fit our culture". There are cases when that's clearly true and cases when it's a lame excuse for missing out on a top prospect. So it's disappointing that he's not coming here, no matter what the reason.

All I know is that cultural thing can be tricky...there are a lot of uber talented people who can be abrasive, want their money, etc.

If he would be a determent to what CHF wants to build, why would not taking him be a disappointment.  I'd say the opposite.

Taking stars for the sake of propping up classes is how we got here in the first place. Roster management is more than just signing whomever.

Sounds like excuses because we missed him tbh

And it’s such an easy excuse to go to, unless you hear Freeze say it (which you wouldn’t of course) then what an incredibly vague excuse that can easily be spread to the masses via message board hearsay. It’s a perfect out on a variety of issues really.
