BROKEBACK'S McMURTRY ACCUSES ACADEMY OF RURAL DISCRIMINATION

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN co-writer LARRY MCMURTRY believes urban drama CRASH beat his film to the Best Picture Award, because Academy members discriminate against rural stories. The writer, who has been involved with four Oscar nominated films including THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, claims Crash won because it was set in Los Angeles - where most Academy voters live. He explains, "The three rural films (I was involved with) lost. The one urban film, Terms of Endearment, won. "Members of the Academy are mostly urban people. Crash was a hometown movie."

SHEEP-HUMPERS UNITE

223839[/snapback]

CASTAWAY

A plane crashed and Ted and his dog Pete were the only survivors. While looking around for food and shelter Ted discovered a herd of sheep and even though there were no shepherd watching he left the sheep alone. After several months he began to look at the sheep in a different way. Every time he would try to catch a sheep his dog Pete would bark loudly and chase the sheep away before he could catch one. This went on for several months and Ted was beginning to get pretty mad. Then one day while walking on the beach Ted saw a ragged looking lifeboat at the edge of the surf. To his great delight there was a beautiful woman laying in the boat. Ted took her back to his hut and nursed her back to health. As she got stronger they would walk farther and farther each day. One day they went over a hill and the herd of sheep were in the clearing before them. Ted looked at the sheep and looked at the beautiful woman. He looked at the sheep and looked at the beautiful woman. He looked at the sheep and looked at the beautiful woman. He looked at the sheep and looked at the beautiful woman. She asked what he wanted and what he needed. Ted asked the woman to hold the dog for a while.

Nice one.....

Maybe McMurtry is right; or maybe they just didn't like his movie. I can see this working as a parody; sort of like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein; but gay cowboys as a serious subject, I don't care where you're from, it just doesn't work..........
