We are in a good spot with Ross regardless at the moment.

Imagine how Ross and others would perceive Auburn if Fields jumped on board the Lindsey Train to the NFL...

QB guru: Auburn fans should be 'excited' about Joey Gatewood

A well-known private quarterbacks coach says the Auburn commit has made a ton of progress.

Keith Niebuhr

When Ken Mastrole looks at 4-star Auburn quarterback commit Joey Gatewood of St. Johns (Fla.) Bartram Trail today, he sees someone who has made enormous amounts of progress the past few years.

“He's come a long a way,” Mastrole said.

Mastrole, a noted private quarterbacks coach, works with players at every level (including Auburn’s Sean White and Mississippi State's Nick Fitzgerald,) and is the lead quarterbacks coach for the Under Armour All-America Game. Although he previously spent a little time with Gatewood at the Future 50 camp last winter, he mostly has watched Gatewood from afar.

But in recent days, Mastrole coached Gatewood at an elite quarterback camp in the Jacksonville area.

The camp included instruction, various assessments and leadership training. Additionally, Gatewood worked with throwing specialist Gardy O’Flynn.

“I thought he did well,” Mastrole said. “He’s really improved a lot. He worked hard, he competed and he’s getting the cerebral part as well, which was awesome. I’m going to give a ton of credit to his head coach at Bartram Trail. He’s phenomenal. He’s in the absolute perfect program even though they split quarterbacks. This coach is going to help him prepare for life, not just football.”

The assessment part of Mastrole’s camp helps quarterbacks see where they’re having breakdowns.

“We test them. We have a testing through 3D motion analysis and that's where our concepts come from,” Mastrole said. “We give quarterbacks a qualitative and quantitative assessment. A lot of kids undersell on the backside of their bodies. They’re strong up front. So that’s something we work with. What I love about Joey, when he’s aligned right and gets his feet underneath him and isn’t bouncing all over the place, he has all the physical tools. They’re off the charts. He can throw the ball. He can move. He can throw off-balance. You can have a guy hanging on him and he can still throw it. He reminds some of (former Auburn quarterback) Nick Marshall. Guys would be hanging on him and he could still make the throw. He could extend the play times two."

According to Mastrole, Gatewood still is learning how to be a quarterback.

“The scary part is, he’s still so raw,” Mastrole said.

Moving forward, Mastrole thinks Gatewood should be focused on becoming more of a “pinpoint passer.”

A lot of that, he said, involveds “lower-half alignment, understanding weight distribution and really working on his functional strength,” Mastrole said. “The biggest thing is learning how to use his lower half, in terms of alignment and just learning that the lower half is so key and so important. Physically, he’s so strong up top. … He just needs to keep chipping away, just stay on the right track.”

In sum …

“I think Joey is someone Auburn fans should be excited about,” Mastrole said. "The biggest thing for him is to continue to grow as a leader and raising the level of his teammates."

I've been excited about this kid from the start! I believe he will surprise some as he develops as a qb, even though he needs some work. I believe he is the kind of player we want at Auburn whether he plays qb or moved to another position.

Don't forget Fields went from hoping to get an offer from Mercer a year or so ago, to everybody's must have QB so apparently, these kids can improve with hard work and practice.

There also seems to be a huge bandwagon effect....kid gets noticed by a couple major schools or has a good camp and all of a sudden he is "must have".  With QBs it is still pretty much the roll of the dice though.

Is Gatewood a sure catch for Auburn? I hope so.

As @Mikey and many others would say, nothing is a sure catch til the fax comes in.

Isn't he visiting this weekend?

AUBURN | Auburn quarterback commitment Joey Gatewood visited Auburn for the final time of the summer, and the four-star recruit made it count.

Gatewood, who is from Bartram Trail in Jacksonville, Fla., arrived in Auburn on Sunday and stayed until Tuesday.

“It was great, awesome,” Gatewood said. “It was great to be back home again, great to hang out with some of the players and also talk a lot with the coaches.”

Gatewood met with Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and spent time with several newcomers, including transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham and freshmen Big Cat Bryant and Devan Barrett.

“I was with Coach Lindsey a lot, Coach Malzahn a lot,” Gatewood said. “Coach Lindsey is an awesome dude. I can’t wait until I get there. I think he has a great game plan for us. And me and Jarrett sat down and watched a lot of film together. Jarrett is a cool dude, a real cool dude. I had a real good time with him.”

Gatewood will return to Auburn in the fall for an official visit, most likely the weekend of Sept. 29 when the Tigers host Mississippi State. Gatewood will sign with the Tigers in December and enroll in January. He has little doubt about that.

“I’ve been talking to and recruiting (five-star receiver) Justyn Ross, (four-star running back) Asa Martin and (four-star lineman) Tank Jenkins,” Gatewood said.

Gatewood is aware of Auburn’s plans to sign two quarterbacks in the 2018 class. He has been aware since the spring.

“Coach Lindsey told me that,” Gatewood said. “It doesn’t bother me. You’re going to have competition wherever you go.”

Gatewood, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, is ranked by Rivals as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 class and No. 123 in the Rivals250.

I am sorry, but the fact this kid is No 7 DT QB and not the starting QB on his high school team is just a remarkable show of just how high his ceiling could be.  Wish this kid the best and hope he sticks with us.

Maybe we should be recruiting the guy he plays behind?   :-\

Just a thought.

I don't think JG is necessarily playing behind anyone.  He will be splitting time with another QB but how much time is the question.  JG is a great athlete and has a lot of potential.

If you can, go watch his video again.   You will see why he plays all over the field.  If I was his coach and had someone who could toss it, I would play Joey elsewhere also.  He looks like superman at the HS level.

Well then...What if he really does get better and stays at qb? I know you can't ask him without him finding it disrespectful or would he be willing to change positions if we get Fields also? Really like his attitude though..Just have to see how things shake out.

You might not have to ask him to change positions. If we land both Fields and Gatewood, and both are what they are cracked up to be at QB, then one of them likely red shirts and then looks to compete for the job as a RSJR when the other heads to the NFL. Given what we've heard about their current levels of polish, it'd likely be Gatewood that gets the RS, which might not be the worst thing for him. I think even with his upside, it'd be hard for him to step into a starting gig at any contender until his 3rd year or so on campus.

Good point. The only thing about that is I feel that JG is such a great athlete that he can make an impression on the field as a true freshman in other ways instead of QB. Here's to hoping the NCAA pass that Proposed RS rule which would allow freshman to play up to 4 games and still be eligible .

We are in a pretty good spot when the #2 or 2nd best qb we sign this year has Cam Newton potential in the future. Fields is ready now but like I have said in the past and the qb gurus are saying JG has unlimited potential. It took cam 3 years and when he got to Blinn things started to click. When he got to Auburn took him until the USC East game to turn into the best player in the country. JG will need time to develope. JF is ready now.

From what I've heard and seen he's not cracked up to be much at QB as experts have implied. Like you say though..A redshirt season could really help him out. But we also need to factor in willis too.

He has Cam like potential if he lives up too it.

Gatewood is going to be fun to watch . He seems like a driven kid who wants to work. He is a cultural fit at AU. Great kid. Hope He stays on board if JF commits
