Well, since we normally play 2 the majority of the game and we have solid depth and development, then I'd say 17 or 18 per class

Sounds good to me

1-2 won't do. We are currently in good shape at LB. We didn't get there by signing one or two a year and that number won't keep us there either.

@Mikey I get where you are coming from in general but this is not the year to take 3 LBs in the class barring attrition. We only have 2 SRs on roster in Britt & Wooten. Plus only 1 Jr in Z-Mac who is unlikely to turn pro after this season. When the freshmen get here we will have 10 schollied players for basically 2.5 playing positions. That's 4 deep at each position. 7 of those are underclassmen. Also in the last 3+ years T-Will has only lost 1 LB to attrition. There simply isn't a need to overstock the LB position given the makeup of the current roster, development, & retention. Spots should go to other areas in this class.

Given the situation you have so clearly outlined, 2 would be OK for a one-time thing. That's assuming the two are quality recruits.  One 3* will not do at all. See 2016 for a quick reference.

What? That's why we had to get rid of Marcus Woodson. Our recruiting was even worse than our run game was in 2004.

Plus, you know how WR coaches and LB coaches clash over recruits.

For @Mikey:

Auburn makes the cut with 4-star LB

Auburn only expects to sign a couple linebackers in the 2021 class and because of that the Tigers have offered only 19 of them that we know of. One of them released his top 10 Monday and included the Tigers on his list.

That player is Baltimore (MD) St. Frances Academy four-star linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson.

These are the teams that made the cut for the talented defender: Auburn, Ole Miss, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, Georgia, Penn State, Arizona State, and Texas A&M. Dumas-Johnson, who is listed at 6-feet-2, 220 pounds, is the No. 213 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 18 outside linebacker according to the industry generated 247Sports Composite. 247Sports has him as the No. 218 recruit in the country.

247Sports believes Dumas-Johnson projects outside in college.

Auburn made Dumas-Johnson's cut despite the fact he never has visited the Tigers. And, worth noting is this: Auburn only offered him March 27.

According to our sources, the Tigers hope to get Dumas-Johnson on campus once visits re-start after the coronavirus scare passes.

Here is the 247Sports player evaluation on Dumas-Johnson, courtesy of national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn: "Ideal outside linebacker size to play in space and be effective against run in college. Excellent athlete. Possesses suddenness. Changes direction well. Reads plays well and reacts quickly. Strong instincts. Can chase the edge. Physical in the run game. Sure tackler. Plays with balance and has plus body control. Rarely overruns play. Shifts through traffic well in run game. Comfortable in coverage. Can open hips and run in pass defense. Has to continue to increase upper body strength. Working on stacking and shedding needed. Multi-year starter at Top 10 program. Day 3 NFL draft potential."

There have been no predictions logged on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for the four-star linebacker at this time. Linebackers coach Travis Williamsis his primary Auburn recruiter.

Based on current intel, 4-star Barrett Carter of Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett may be Auburn's top priority at linebacker right now. Here is his 247Sports eval: "Shorter linebacker but has a relatively filled out frame with long arms. Could potentially top out around 240 pounds once in a college strength program. Has shown his speed by posting 40 times in the 4.5 range at college camps. Plays at one of the better high school programs in metro Atlanta and in Georgia's highest classification. Primarily plays on the outside at this point and sees success as a pass rusher off the edge and in chasing plays down in pursuit. His speed transfers over to the field, as he closes quickly and shows the ability to make some athletic plays in space. Shows good play strength and has some striking power. Is better as a blitzer and space player than as an inside, instinctual run defender at this point. Solid, not elite production as a junior, particularly from a one-way player. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power Five level with the potential to develop into an NFL Draft pick."

Damn Auburn only offered 19 LB’s so that means we need commitments from all of them lol

After reading that the title should be “ why 9 recruits are probably going to GA or AL and 1 going to AU”.

We going to get Fairchild.

Watch out with Mondon & Carroll with T-Will.

Caddy has us very much in it for the two RB's.

IMO.

I actually tend to agree looking at the current group of linebackers.

  • Britt will graduate this year
  • Pappoe could legitimately leave after his Junior season
  • McClain is a Junior and with the talent coming up he might be one to watch for the Transfer Portal after this year depending on how playing time works out (Steiner and Riley are monsters plus Tisdol is no slouch)
  • Wooten is a senior
  • Then we have a bunch of walk-ons and the current freshman class

One would think T-Will being the recruiting coordinator might help garner another spot for the LBs

Highly unlikely. He's in the 2 deep & plays quite a bit at all 3 positions.

Plus schollied player Marsh, Brown, & Brothers (who has gotten a lot of positive talk lately.)

The title means nothing in terms of functionality. It's just a way to give a coach an extra title. The off field recruiting staff handles all the actual recruiting coordination.

I get what you're saying but 3 still wouldn't be unreasonable.

The spot where we really need some freshmen would be DT. Two seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore next season.

Barring attrition yes it is. You have 2 true LB playing positions & 1 that plays 20% of the time at best. If we took 3 that would be 11 schollied players for essentially 2+ playing positions. That's too many.

Cody Brown & Alton McCaskill would be a powerful running back combo for the Tigers if we could sign both of them.

We have Goodwin and we’re only taking one more.

See @augolf1716 It’s a few days later and he came back around to it.

I don’t see anyway somebody takes McClain spot to where he has to transfer

  • 2 weeks later...

I wonder if this is Bicknell's OL philosophy?  Or  could this be Morris' scheme needs?

Seems like these OL are all over 6'6" being offered.  We don't currently have many with that minimum height other than Troxell( Guys that will be playing).

I hope the 2 of them got together and said ok, the short stocky guys are not working, so let's try the tall, stocky guys with longer arms and see if they do any better.

Most quality OT‘s need to be at least 6’5 or taller. Most teams try to recruit tall OT’s. It’s not nothing new.
