Why would I do that? That is not analogous to the nature of his tweets. He said he wouldn't say war eagle. Then he explained why. Then he said what he would do instead. Then, after a bunch of people responded to him with hate language, he addressed those people in kind with harsh language.

You are suggesting something very different.

This is actually a good exercise and propaganda in misinformation. His comments presented without context don't remotely tell the whole story. Yet, Auburn fans predictably act the fool.

It's a stupid cantaloupe and is even less than a direct stab at someones view or opinion than what he said but will show how little things get blown up on the net.

If you take a hard stance on the internet.  people will get irritated and attack.   It doesn't even need to be an extreme.    You are calling Auburn fans (and me indirectly) a fool.    You are already in attack mode,  and my statement wasn't that much of an extreme.     Thank you for proving my point.

Your view is 100% wrong,  and I am correct.

(does that  irritate you  and make you want to attack some more?)

BTW McLoffus,  I like you and am just trying to prove a point by picking at you..  I respect you as a poster and do not mean to actually offend you.

Is it football season yet?

Not quite. But I find this conversation quite stimulating. We are hashing out socialistic concerns  without getting  mad at each other and I have learned a new term (Soy Boy) that I had never heard before, which I thought was going to be a synonym for homo, but was actually validated with a philosophy that makes total sense. Sweet!

Yes, I'm sure that most everyone here is well aware of this.

The response is foolish behavior. Just because the intent is foolish doesn’t mean you have to respond with foolish . It’s no different than if someone calls me a derogatory name. It’s foolish but do I have to match the foolishness ? Control your own actions. You are giving someone else the power over your own emotions over the internet mind you.

My guess is that Dr. Goldberg likes to challenge people's beliefs. I further guess that he will challenge his student's beliefs as well. I hope he is a great teacher and becomes a great Auburn man. Like some other people in leadership roles, he might do well being more careful with his Tweets!

I understand this.  I personally do not think I responded with foolishness.  didn't call any names, used nothing personal.  All I did was point out the prof's folly.   I can not control the rest of the internet.

Clarification: I wasn't directly meaning you. Just in general, people let words make them out of character. Words do have meaning, do not get me wrong. I just never understand why people let it take them out of character. I see all the time in media, the internet, etc. A lot of times these people don't even mean it, they are doing it to get a response or hits.

WDE buddy.   I will stop experimentally trying to get a rise out of you before it gets out of hand.  I enjoy your posts, humor and knowledge.  and was just purposely trying to irritate you like the prof is irritating fans.

I don't mean your post is like the prof's, because it is not. I've already explained why, a couple times, but it's not taking.

As for your thought experiment, I don't think that it's as purposeful or well-designed as you'd hoped.

Nothing that you've said is offensive. Just riddled with misunderstanding. Which is all I've intended to point out. Nothing personal. War Eagle.

Looks like he opens with "My first controversial tweet...". Is this the start of the whole thing? If so, hes definitely trying to stir the pot.  He could have not said anything on a public format and nobody would have ever known or have any response to it.  He could have gone years at Auburn with out saying it and probably nobody would have even noticed.

Yep.  Like him or not....he'll be the dean of the school of marketing before his time is up.

Having dipped my toe into academia, here’s my guess:

I tracked down his credentials. He has a PhD from Cornell in African American Studies. While not the most complicated field in existence, a PhD in any field from a real (non-degree mill) school is not easy, and you have to be at least decently intelligent to make it through the program. He’s smart.

But even smart people can do dumb things if they are thinking with their emotions (related to the concept of automatic processing in psychological research). This is possibly because of an existing bias that is extremely common in northern states. One of the most common biases among northerners is against southerners. My guess is that this guy has an aversion to southern culture, and expects that everyone from the south will be a redneck or a hick. I am aware of this because a) of spending a few years living in northern states and experiencing this bias and b) it’s actually a documented phenomenon that’s been identified in bias research.

So why take a job at Auburn at all? He may not even want to be at Auburn. The fact is that the academic market is really tough. Professorial positions require 5-10 years of 60+ hour weeks before tenure. You have to do an insane amount of research during those years to get tenure. These positions are also very competitive. You don’t really have the freedom to pick where you want to live. Jobs can be pretty sparse, and competition for them is harder than most other fields. So, you really just have to be open to taking a job wherever you can get one (which is why many academics move a lot in their first 15ish years).

An added note here is that he’s actually been hired as an instructor rather than a professor. In academic lingo, the order is adjunct (part time teacher), instructor (full time teacher), assistant professor (pre-tenure researcher/teacher), associate professor (tenure), professor (senior tenured). So he’s been hired to the lowest full time role, which may mean he was having an especially hard time finding a job elsewhere.

Good info! Thanks!

Is it possible that potential employees first checked out his Twitter account? That might explain it if he had trouble finding a job!

His other 3 potential options:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Campbell Fighting Camels

Illinois Fighting Illini

I know you’re joking, but you point to an interesting question. Would he be saying something like this if he were at one of those schools.

This is the most uninteresting thread I can recall. I’ll try to change the direction. Does anyone know how Jim Rome started using his “war” prefixes?

I had to look that one up. Not sure if it was meant to spoof us or not but it's about as offensive as barners to me...which is not at all. War Envy!!!

Every time I hear that I wonder about it for about 5 seconds. This is the first time I’ve asked anyone.

His opinion may be poorly informed and ridiculous -- someone needs to tell the guy that AU is not the "War Eagles" -- but hardly a firing offense.

Not saying it means nothing but if you look at the rest of his comments and think that is the Professor that I want or that I want to be teaching my child and representing my university, you have problems. If you go into an interview and you know that little about the college or company that you are going to work for is ridiculous.

Know what I want in a professor? I want one that knows his subject and knows how to teach it. Their opinions on anything else are pretty damned immaterial.
