What it's like to play for Hugh Freeze

Keith Niebuhr

With Auburn in search of the football program’s next head coach, several potential candidates already have started to emerge. In the coming days and weeks, Auburn Live will offer insight into those coaches. We’ll do this by talking to people who know these men well — former players. To give them the freedom to fully express their opinions, we’re not using their names.

Today’s subject: Hugh Freeze.

The following intel comes from a former offensive starter under Freeze at Ole Miss.

-Overall thoughts on Freeze as a coach: “Great man, heck of a recruiter, heck of an offense guru. What he did at Ole Miss in his time was tremendous. He brought Ole Miss back to a national brand.”

-Although Freeze is known to be an offensive guy, he wasn’t a micromanager, according to our source. “He let the coordinator run (the offense). I’m sure he gave his opinion, but he let the team do their jobs. The (assistants) loved Freeze. He would let my position coach do his own thing. Let the position coaches do their jobs.”

-His thoughts on what Freeze’s strengths are as the leader of a program: “Being a players’ coach. The second thing was, he coached us hard and he was fair. He cared and wanted what was best for you. He was transparent with you. If you weren’t doing something right, he would sit you out. If you weren’t doing what you needed to do school wise, he would sit you out. He was very fair in what he did.”

-Freeze as a recruiter: “The head coach is a closer. Obviously, they’re the ones who come to dinner with you, go to your house. But he was involved the whole time. He laid out the vision for you, where you’d be on that team. He had a plan for you when you were there. He stayed true to it. And he made sure you stayed true to it.”

-How Freeze connected with our source’s family when he was a recruit: “He was great with parents. He was a Mississippi guy. My parents were, too. But he could connect with anybody from anywhere. He’s just a very likable guy. Very outgoing guy who could fit in with anyone.”

-What Freeze was like after a loss: “He was the family type of guy. Lose together, win together type of guy. When we got down, we’d go back to work.”

-What Freeze was like before a game: “Honestly, he was the same before any game. Sometimes, he’d say, ‘You can’t play down to your opponent.’ But he was the same for every game. He wasn’t (tight before a big game).”

-A rough estimate on the percentage of his teammates who thought highly of Freeze: “We loved him. He was great. I would give it about 90 percent. They all respected how he coached and we would win games because of that. He’s a great leader. A great motivational guy. He laid out that plan for you. He’ll teach you and he’ll coach you. People respected that.”

-One thing he wished Freeze had done differently: “There really weren’t any negatives. But he could have just been more upfront with the situation (that caused Freeze to resign) before it came up.” (Our source said it would have been better to hear about it via team meeting and not social media.)

So you're for the hire?

So, you have a hard time processing information like an adult? They literally just posted an article, without offering any personal opinion whatsoever. What the hell are you on about?

Well, forgive me for trying to gauge as many opinions as possible!

Not everybody likes to talk about hookers and underaged kids all day. But you do you, boo. 😉

I don’t expect an angel but seems we can find someone with better judgment.

Sure, kid. You’re forgiven. Maybe next time you’ll realize the difference between a news article and a poster’s opinion. Plenty of threads focusing on people’s opinions, if that’s what you want to gauge.

Please provide a source where he was hiring hookers for recruits?  Seriously...I have never seen that before but then again we have people who just say whatever without proof.

FYI, most kids in college are not underage. Unless you can provide the exact age of the recruits that benefited from this escort service, please stop spreading this crap

There is no source but is the likely truth based on the public phone log activity. I suppose you could believe that all of those hookers were for his personal use, but that would be naïveté.

I love the likely truth argument. Those are bulletproof and indefensible. Screw those people who say allegations should be proven!

He is likely guilty! Off with his head!!

If these clowns had to provide facts and sources, then they would’ve had to stop raging out hours ago. It’s perfectly fine to be upset with a potential Freeze hire, but fabricating details to push a narrative is pretty low.

This isn’t a court of law it is who you want leading your hundred million plus football program.

Fabrication?  The phone logs are in the public domain.

You took it a little further than just the phone logs. Pretty sure you added sone “details” having to do with underage kids. And earlier, some goof posted that Freeze was trying to cover for the actual rapist, when he was talking about McCaw.

True but there is always a witch hunt waiting to happen so it seems to be best not to get caught up in likelies and trend on facts. I’m not trying to convince anybody to change their opinions I just get irritated when people latch on to things like this when they themselves would hope to be condemned by proven facts given the same circumstances.

Sources or facts are not required to make a point. I mean we all know hugh Freeze runs an illegal massage parlor and forces the recruits to go get a happy ending all while supporting the Antifa, Trump, Biden, Epstein, the Obamas and Clinton's.

And on Sundays he likes to unwind by going down to the local animal shelter and kill puppies and kittens for fun...

We all know that's true we don't need facts to get in the way.

Believe what you like. If you take a look at the phone logs and the investigation findings and talk to people around the Ole Miss program I think you will reach the same conclusions.

All they have is phone logs...don't put your thoughts on what you would do or think he did...that is just stupid.  And I guess that you have went around Ole Miss and know the inside of what happened.  If you know what the Houston Nutt connection...that may explain some things...
