Beaker 2,457
Just watching the Cowboys game and I see they fired their veteran OL coach and promoted the assistant. Now the assistant played in the NFL for a decade and only coached one yr I think. Not saying this is the formula for success, but I wonder if we have any former OL NFL types that would make a "get in your grill," kinda coach that Auburn could use one day (soon). Kinda like how we all think K Greene should be on staff in some capacity or Takeo Spikes. Bad idea?

While I love your sentiment, I'm starting to think those guys are dinosaurs unless they are super charismatic and personable. My fear is (most) of today's kids aren't able to handle that type of coaching any longer. They want the "players" coach who can make them feel good about themselves and push their buttons in less obvious ways. I'd be interested to hear @bigbird's take on that. Even Garner has difficulty with that approach on some players. It is what it is.

Just be one of those hundreds of "analysts" that Saban hires (who obviously coach). Greene and Spikes' jobs can simply be "Get in your Grill Specialist". Tiger 8,829
LMAO @ the idea of hiring Takeo Spikes just to yell at any and everyone in sight I'm just imagining a Terry Tate type of exchange after a dumb mistake by one of our players

We all know how badly he treated Jalen Hurts, strung him along all year long to serve NS purpose and give him some insurance at the QB position. AU people appreciate and value CGM & Co's calm/laid back demeanor, no foul language, they show support and build solid relationships with the players - AU is Family not a win at all costs mentality. And to a large degree that’s why Saban has been extremely successful and Gus, not so much. I can’t stand Saban but you’re delusional if you think that he doesn’t care about his players. He maintains good relationships with many players once they leave the program and he’s put way more players in a position to be successful that Gus has. I read much of the Jalen Hurts thread but it appeared to be heavy on opinions and severely lacking facts. Saban likely didn’t do or say anything that any other coach would have done or said. While I also prefer a laidback coach, I’ve also come to realize that being too laidback can be a huge liability. Has it ever occurred to you that just maybe Gus is too laid back with little or no sense of urgency, and that many of the players may be emulating these traits? Many times players emulate the personalities of their coaching staffs. One of Coach Shug Jordan’s contains curse words and he’s still revered to the masses even today. I don’t condone persistent verbal or physical abuse of the players, but IMO when their coddled they become soft, and we’ve had a number of those issues over the last few years. As long as the masses continue to embrace mediocrity it will be the norm.

I think you've been had, pretty sure @keesler was joshin' you. It's regrettable we can't have both. I played for a baseball coach who called me every name in the book but also made it known (beyond the shadow of a doubt) that he had my best interest at heart. I would have run through a wall for him...kinda' did on many occasions.

One of the problems I have with this divide (there’s a lot) is that one of these guys had their former players on twitter calling them incompetent and hinting for wanting to change. One of them is undefeated and might have the most indomitable season ever occurring. At some point, winning matters more to players than being a good guy, and I think Gus has set that line thrice over
