Anyone have the scoop on Protho?

Been lots of internet rumors.

Shula took time to deny them for today's papers.

Talked about "why hurry Prothro back?" "We'll take ouir time."

Don't think there's any substance to things other than the break, which was bad enough.

Right now the most credible reason I have heard is that he was running a slight fever. They wanted to make sure it was not from any type of infection in his leg. Just a precaution is what I have heard.

Just a fever. My ass.

Something is up. We will know in time.

Hope he makes it allright. He had surgery last Mon. or Tues., correct?

I truly hope the kid is able to play again. I can hear the excuses now though already, when we beat Bama. If Protho had just been healthy. Blah, Bu Blah.

If it was a compound break, infection is almost a given. My BIL fought infection for almost 6 months before finally knocking it out.

As of 5 hours ago the latest.

Shula said Sunday that injured Tide receiver Tyrone Prothro was still in the hospital after having surgery to put a steel rod in his leg last Saturday night. Shula countered concerns that Prothro had any setback in his care, and rumors that he had undergone a second surgery. Shula said he spoke with team doctor Les Fowler Sunday and that everything was fine.

“They are keeping him in the hospital to make sure he’s okay before releasing him,” Shula said.

Prothro’s release had previously been anticipated on Thursday or Friday of last week. “They’re keeping him there just to make sure,” Shula said. “There’s no sense to hurry him getting out of the hospital, but he’s in good spirits.”

Asked about a rumor that Prothro had undergone a second surgery, Shula said, “No. That’s false. Don’t ask me to respond to every rumor, though.”

i know prothro from high school and have heard from some of his close friends that he does have some infection in the leg and the doctors have had to go back in and scrape the bone to remove some infection. they also told me that he may have to have a second surgery. for some reason the surgery was done in tuscaloosa and not in birmingham. it doesnt make sense to me to let a second rate doctor perform a surgery such as this when you have the best orthapedic doctors in the world only 45 minutes away. seems kind of cheap on the university's part to me.

FWIW, I heard that he has an infection in the bone. If this true, you can expect him to be on mega doses of antbiotics for weeks. These are usually IV ingested btw. So you either have to stay in the hospital, do it yourself, or have someone administer the IV for you.

If this is true, the best way to avoid NCAA problems is to have him at the hospital. Who and how do you pay for a nurse to come and give him the IV? I would not trust any college kid to administer his own IVs either.

Think of all the problems if this is true. One photo of a few IV marks and the press would have him on drugs, etc.

Not saying it is true, but if it is, it explains a ton of coach/doctor speak.

For the 'Bama fans:

We're raising money to donate in Prothro's name to CrimsonTradition. ALL profits will be donated. We're trying to get everyone who buys stuff to wear it to UT. Pass the word if you know any UA fans who might want this. So far stuff is selling VERY well.

I hope he gets well soon, no matter the condition.

If he has to be on IV antibiotics for any length of time they will install a pick line (sp?) in his arm in order to administer the drugs. The pick line is stitched into placed and has to be maintained (cleaned/cleared) daily. Typically if you go home and still require IV antibiotics a home healthcare specialist will stop by every day and make sure supplies are present and that the pick line has not clogged. With a pick line installed, all you do to administer the drug is thread the syringe/drip bag into one of the ports in the pick line, no injections. My 4 year old had an appendicitis, and she required 2 weeks of treatment at home (& 2 weeks in the hospital) of IV antibiotic treatment...fun. It’s covered by your health insurance.

Thanks for the info. My uncle had to do the injections with out the pick line though. They had him do it the hard way. His wife ended up doing the phlebotomy? work.

DKW is not a Dr, and does not play one on tv.

An infection of the bone is osteomyelitis. If this is the case you are correct in the length of therapy can be prolonged. However, IV therapy is not necessarily indicated. The key to therapy is what the organism is and how sensitive it is to various antibiotics. If antibiotic therapy is indicated, 'home' IV therapy is not at all uncommon. There would be no reason for him to stay in hospital and, in fact, there would be every reason to discharge him.

If this involves the screws used in attaching any rods or plates they will almost certainly have to be removed.

TUSCALOOSA | Details regarding the injury to University of Alabama junior receiver Tyrone Prothro were released Tuesday in the form of a written statement from UA team physician Dr. Les Fowler.

"Tyrone Prothro suffered an open comminuted fracture of his left tibia and fibula during the Alabama-Florida game on Oct. 2, 2005. He underwent emergency surgery that night to stabilize the fracture.

"During the post-operative period, he developed an infection, secondary to bacterial infection at the time of his injury. He did not develop a staph infection.

"Since that time he has undergone aggressive treatment and antibiotic for the infection. To date, the attempts to eradicate the infection appear to have been successful.

"All wounds that he suffered are healing well following the procedure necessary to close those wounds.

Prothro Update

By Kirk McNair

Date: Oct 18, 2005

Tyrone Prothro has an infection associated with the injury he suffered when he was lost for the season with a broken leg and he remains in DCH Regional Medical Center. At the request of his family, Dr. Les Fowler, who performed the surgery, issued a statement Tuesday updating Prothro’s condition.

Dr. Fowler’s statement said, “We expect Tyrone to remain hospitalized for several more days. The Sports Medicine staff at The University of Alabama is optimistic for a full recovery following this very severe injury.”

There was far more interest in the medical bulletin than in the letter Alabama Coach Mike Shula delivered to Tyrone Prothro at DCH Medical Center Tuesday morning. Shula apologized for being a bit late, but said he had visited with Tyrone and delivered a letter from The President. Shula did not disclose the contents of the letter, but said that Prothro was surprised and pleased to receive the letter.

Shula said, “Pro’s father came into the hospital room and Tyrone said, ‘Dad, I I got a letter from one of my buddies.’ His father said, ‘Who.’ Tyrone said, ‘W.’”

The statement from Dr. Fowler:

“Tyrone Prothro suffered an open comminuted fracture of his left tibia and fibula during the Alabama-Florida game on Oct. 2, 2005. He underwent emergency surgery that night to stabilize the fracture.

“During the post-operative period, he developed an infection, secondary to bacterial contamination at the time of his injury. He did not develop a staph infection.

“Since that time, he has undergone aggressive treatment and antibiotic for the infection. To date, the attempts to eradicate the infection appear to have been successful.

“All wounds that he suffered are healing well following the procedure necessary to close those wounds.

As much as I hate Alabama, I wouldn't wish Prothro's injury on my worst enemy. I hope he recovers and can play again someday. He is a talented young man and hopefully will make a name for himself in the pro's as well as college football when he returns.

The picture that showed him breaking his ankle is so sad! This Auburn fan wishes him the best, but I still want to 'BEAT BAMA"!!

:cheer:

Prothro could be released in a few days

October 18, 2005

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama receiver Tyrone Prothro is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days after breaking two bones in his left leg and developing an infection following surgery.

Prothro has been hospitalized the past two weeks, and doctors are optimistic for a full recovery. He most likely will miss the rest of the season.

Alabama team physician Les Fowler said Prothro's family had requested that no details of his status be released before Tuesday since he had emergency surgery following the Florida game Oct. 2.

``Since that time, he has undergone aggressive treatment and antibiotic for the infection,'' Fowler said in a statement, adding Prothro did not develop a staph infection. ``All wounds that he suffered are healing well.''

Prothro landed awkwardly while attempting to catch a pass in the end zone on a fourth-down play with the Crimson Tide leading 31-3 with just under 9 minutes left. A cart was almost immediately brought on the field as Prothro lay in the end zone.

Good news. Our prayers are with you, Tyrone.
