Zay Lanier

I've heard that if the Rivals people are truthful, he'll be ranked as a 3 Star. An outstanding Athlete, grades were a Major concern from what I've heard. Plus, yesterday Rivals got their hands on his Highlight Tape.

WR 6"1, 185lbs. 4.5

Had offers from Kentucky, Miss State and Troy. Other interest from Ole Miss and UAB.

Jr. Stats

Receiving: No 25, Yds 687, Avg 27.5, TD 8

Defense: Tck 38, Int 5

From a very reputable poster on another board:

Yesterday, Zay weighed in at 196 pounds. He is right at 6'2". He is not playing basketball now to study for the ACT. He has the GPA and passed the grad. exam. Everyone is confident he will qualify.

....

Has been told he can play WR, Safety or Corner

...

He is as good as anyone in the south, regardless of the ranking.

....

Has the potential to be better than Courtney Taylor.

....

His brother will be a national recruit. Starts on the varsity bb. He is 6'-175 in the 8th grade. Fast, catch anything with hops....and smart.

This guy is probably underrated, but from a PR standpoint, Chizik's first recruit should not have been a 2 star.

The media is calling this guy "Chizik's first recruit". Why are the 4* guys that de-committed and Chizik & Co. got back not Chizik's first recruits?

Because Chizik is the head coach at AU. If we were talking UA here, the recommitments would be headline news.

I wouldn't consider them "Chizik recruits." That's great that he got guys to either not decommit or recommit, but these are guys that were being heavily recruited by AU before he became coach. It's great and all, but nothing that's worthy of going nuts over.

If we had lost them, it would have been worth going nuts over. Don't think the B'ham papers wouldn't have had a field day if several of the top guys had decided to go elsewhere.

Why, ol' $aban hizzself went over to Ga. and made an in-house visit with the (then) de-committed Lutzen trying to get him to The Crapstain. Chizik whupped Dinky's butt on that one. Where's the love?

This is from ESPN:

Lanier is an impressive athlete with all the tools to develop into a good skill player at the next level. He has the size, speed, smooth hips and ball skills that should make him more coveted on the recruiting trail. On offense, he is used in a variety of ways and is a difference maker with the ball in his hands. Can change speeds and kick into a second gear when needing to pull away in the second level. Top-end play speed is very good. Dangerous in space as well with his jump-cut and overall smooth movement skills. Can change direction sharply with gearing down much. Very slippery to wrap up and can earn productive yards after contact with his strong, wiry frame and determination as a runner. However, he projects more as a slot receiver and would need to polish up his hands (bit of a body catcher) and route running skills. Could get a look at safety with his good range, breaking quickness and long frame. Return skills add to his upside. Overall, Lanier is a very versatile athlete and a kid who could provide depth and a spark in all three phases of the game at the next level. A sleeper on the recruiting trail and a real competitor.

Notes

2008: Rushed for 871 yards, had 870 receiving yards. Recorded 68 tackles and seven interceptions. Returned one punt and one kickoff for touchdowns...

Makes one wonder: If he could have focused all his time, training, and development on only one position, how good would he have been? (or how many "stars" if that's the way you want to measure it.)

I know...i was dripping sarcasm.... B) Though I wouldn't mind seeing Tubby as AD...nor would I mind seeing them fire Jacobs.
