IMO kid is too good for PWO (scout team for 3 or four years).  Unfortunately for Pate he backed up Taulia for two years and rarely saw the field. Most D1 programs have determined their targets by Soph. or Junior years at the latest. He is now a 3* but may have to settle for mid level program. However would love to see him in O & B. Many "experts" think he was best QB in the state.

I don't think he's necessarily locked into the scout team for years on end. If he turns out to be a better QB than some scholarship guys, he'll pass them on the depth chart. It just doesn't happen very often because the scouting isn't normally that far off the mark.

I'm sure this has been answered, but I'm not scanning through all 66 pages to find out...how many can we take this year? Think we had 24 last year, so maybe one of the early signees counts backwards and we can sign 26? Or has the counting back thing been snuffed out by the NCAA?

Seems like it’s been capped at 27.

As in we can sign 27 this year, or as in no one can sign more than 27 in a year?

The NCAA capped it 30 a couple years ago in terms of new enrollees (25 with up to 5 counting to the previous class if there is spots available). We can enroll 27 new players. We enrolled 23 last year. @Rednilla here's a post & thread I created a year or so ago detailing the signing & enrollee rules & how they are different very thoroughly. I think you will enjoy the read.

Can't remember the last time a PWO QB received any meaningful pt except a few mopup snaps as a reward for sticking it out for three or four years. My memory is not so good anymore but you are correct in that it can happen. Hope kid makes the right decision.

Wasn't Will Hastings a PWO when he came to AU? If a PWO comes to practice and shows they need to be on the field on game day, it's not unheard of for coaches to recognize that and get them on the field on game day is what I'm saying here...

There was a QB that walked on at Texas Tech, started as a freshman, then left and walked on at Oklahoma.  Can’t quite remember his name

Does this defensive line class rival the 2013 or 2016  Dline class?

If we add Burks, on paper it’s better than 2013 but not better than 2016.

Hastings was not a QB. My point was odds are astronomical for QB. position.

And only slightly less astronomical at other positions.

Folks love to point out high profile exceptions in these conversations as though it happens all the time. I'm not sure why, but it's very common so I guess it's a normal and natural impulse.

We all love the story where the underdog wins. Its human nature.  You are right it doesn't happen often but when it does it gets hyped up a lot and people remember it.

Kevin Greene might be the fourth-most talked about Auburn player of all time among Auburn fans, after Bo, Cam and Wade Christopher.

At Thompson, Evan McGuire handled kickoffs, place-kicks and punting for the 2019 Class 7A champions.

Now headed to Auburn as a preferred walk-on, McGuire might become even more of a specialist.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do, but the only thing I’m for sure about is they want me to do kickoff,” he said.

McGuire boomed 69-of-77 kickoffs, or 89 percent, into the end zone for touchbacks last season and 120-of-153, or 78 percent, in his final two high school seasons. He also made 6-of-6 field goals, including a 44-yarder, last year and averaged 38.8 yards per punt before handling all the kicking duties for the Alabama all-stars in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.

Andres Carlson appears entrenched as Auburn’s place-kicker, but punter Arryn Siposs is an early entry to the NFL draft. Carlson also handled kickoffs last year, although Sage Ledbetter and Ben Patton had two kickoffs apiece.

Auburn tallied 48 touchbacks on 68 kickoffs last season and allowed 22.3 yards per return, ranking 96th in kickoff return defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

McGuire has family ties to Auburn – his mom is a graduate, he said, and his sister is a current student.

McGuire had scholarship offers from Georgia State, Chattanooga and Army, but said he always hoped to get an opportunity at Auburn. He said he attended a camp there last summer and consistently heard from Auburn throughout his senior season.

What does McGuire think about joining the Iron Bowl rivalry and possibly playing against former Thompson quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who will battle for the Crimson Tide’s starting job during spring practice.

“I think it will be pretty cool,” McGuire said.

As a preferred walk-on, McGuire will not immediately be on scholarship, but he is guaranteed a roster spot. Auburn signed 23 players last month on Early Signing Day and added a 24th commitment recently from junior college defensive lineman Deandre Butler.

Could be like Matt Clark. All he did was kick off as well during the Tub years. Dude had the golden boot. Before the kickoffs were even moved up he was booming that thing out of the end zone. I think every one but 2 of his kicks in his career went for touchbacks.

So it looks like we're going to go 2 straight classes without signing a HS OT.

@ellitor can you think of any 2 year stretch where a coach has not signed a HS OT?
