If we hire a coach, someone with NFL-only experience is a recipe for disaster. Football knowledge is secondary to program management here.

See Arizona State for reference.

Ask Lil Mook man. We’re all just sitting here patiently awaiting his word of a firing.

Dell not having been a coordinator is a big deal. And Georgia's offensive scheme isn't why they win, except that it complements the defense.

Aranda is not leaving Baylor for Auburn. I mean, please. He's king of a little universe right now.

Payton lacks college experience. That usually goes badly.

As for Sanders, it's one thing to mobilize resources your peer institutions cannot muster. It's entirely another thing to develop a program with just a bit lower resources than its primary rivals.

If we're serious about this, we'll do what Auburn has always done when we've been successful. We'll pluck someone of lower status, whether an excellent assistant or a G5 head coach who gets what we're doing. Or maybe, like LSU did with Saban and we did with Tuberville, a coach who's outperforming his setting.

Most of all, I hope Harsin gets some vindication and maybe some coaching. One thing I admire about Saban--and this will sound weird--is his humility, his desire to get feedback from peers. I worry about Harsin's capacity to do that, but I hope it gets tapped.

Relative to Aranda, I agree. Cincinnati proved you can get into CFP without being in big 3 conference which is why Riley went to USC IMO.

I know folks don't want to hear it but if Harsin is fired I'd bet money that Gene Chizik gets hired. it is exactly what the ptb will do and to their credit, he would at the very least provide something of a stabilizing presence. I know no one seems to want him but you can't tell me that's not precisely who auburn is going to seek to hire in terms of an immediate contact regarding a potential coaching search.

I know.  Probably not my best effort.  I respect his story and that clouds my vision.  My apologies to you and yours.

Not throwing rocks at you, but were you an Auburn fan during the Chiz era, especially 2011, 2012?  We were anything but stable.

I give him his due, but let's keep it real.

I hear you but I still view him as a stable coach in terms of bringing in coordinators, letting them coordinate and recruiting appropriately irregardless of 2012's absolute disaster. I feel like it's exactly who auburn will target if they go on a coaching search.

Here's who I think the idiots in charge of our football program (not AG) will contact in no particular order:

1. Gene Chizik - never mind he lost the team and had to hire a security company to keep the players from breaking curfew

2. Gus Malzahn - we were only kidding.  we love you're set in your ways and won't change

3. Tommy Tuberville - he knows politics

4. Terry Bowden - he's really grown up

5. Doug Barfield - he's still breathing

6. Jay Jacobs - he still has the puppet strings on his hands and feet

7. Bill Oliver - maybe 3rd time will be the charm

Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

I hear you, but I see it differently.   I thought I heard second hand Chiz was not a big fan of NIL and ironically, I think he jumped back into coaching at UNC as the DC.  I may have that wrong, I am home with the flu, so I don't trust anything I am reading or thought I read.  Heck, I can't even remember what I said to Dr Gouge when he asked for my input earlier.

So let me just set up the ideal profile:

  • someone who knows the SEC as a coach (maybe a player)
  • someone who would attract talent
  • has recruited the SEC successfully
  • has recruited against our rivals would be a bonus (not required)
  • has a lot of coaching connections - been a coach for a while
  • prefer a younger coach, us old guys don't seem to attract as much talent
  • would be nice to have been a coordinator, but Dye and Sweeny were not coordinators (among others)

Bout right?

We missed the coaching carousel, let's not make this list "Mission Impossible"

Wasn't 2012 when we had players murdered at an off campus party? It was like 3 killed at the party and 2 were Auburn football players.

I like Chizik as a person but our football program was a turbulent ride the 4 years he was coaching here. Even in 2010, we won the National Title but it was stressful as hell from week 10 until around the SEC Championship Game because we never knew if the NCAA was going to make Cam sit during the investigation, if he would be eligible or ineligible, etc. It turned out fine but it was still very stressful while it was playing out. Also, I seem to remember around 2011 Michael Dyer and a few others were failing drug tests for synthetic marijuana and eventually were let go.

I'll always love the fact that Chizik coached us to a Natty but you can't deny that 2010-2012 was a rollercoaster, exhausting and stressful.

Also, his coordinator hires of The Pornstache Brian Van Gorder and Scott Loeffler were arguably the worst coordinator hires of the past few decades.

What about Kevin Steele?

He was a crowd favorite last time around and it's going on 10 minutes now that Auburn hasn't done anything new to destroy the football program.

OK so I agree van gorder sucked and lefty was/is hands down the worst o.c. on the planet with a track record of destroying programs he goes too. that said, I mean .. a lot of college kids are going to drink, they're going to smoke weed (frankly it should be viewed as a better alternative than drinking) and the that was when the whole synthetic crap was fresh on the scene. that said, dyer definitely had issues and the party / folks getting shot certainly is inexcusable. I still think the ptb immediately target him. I don't want him but I also don't think he would be terrible either.

I was anti Steele last year but if he can come in and bring a dynamic OC that he lets operate freely then I’m fine with that.  Similar to the way Chiz came in and hired a great staff.  Stabilize the program and either promote from within or bring in a top gun when Steele retires in 4-5 years

Edit to add you’ll get Steele cheap and no way AG gets his man this go round.

The problem nobody has given much credence to Auburn would have to payoff a lot of assistant coaches to leave and hire a new HC and give him a very tight budget to hire staff.   THAT IS GONNA BE IMPOSSIBLE as programs slide into Spring Ball.

So who could we hire that might fit the bill and keep a staff together for a season while he sorts through this mess?  I have an idea and nobody would agree with me, but he fits the bill.

Stay with me on planet Earth here.   Not sure he has ever recruited anyone.  Especially in the SEC

Kevin Steele.  Most the Boise boys are on defense and special teams.  Keep Caddie and Etheridge.  Gotta hire an OC anyway
