@autan A NIL package is in place to cover Towns's ecpenses should he choose AU. He & his family won't have to pay anything.

It hasn't been too long ago, maybe a year or 15 months, when people scoffed at me for saying that the scholarship limit is meaningless because any NIL collective can just pay the guy's way, plus some. But here we are paying some guy's way so that a walkon will be in as good a shape as a scholarship player. As the NIL collectives grow we'll see more and more walkons being very well off financially. The sky's the limit!

I’m betting this type of approach only happens to kickers. Walk ons in any other “starting position “ probably won’t get this approach.

Why not? You're at the scholarship limit and Mr. Superstar OT suddenly is interested. Never mind the limit, just fork over the NIL $. He's a walkon getting more than the scholarship guys are getting and it's perfectly legal.

Does appear to be legal. Will be interesting but doubt we ever know.

But NIL money is taxable and scholarship not, right?

So, just pay him 20% more. It was rumored that Tennessee is paying a QB prospect over $1 million. Does anybody think taxes are at the top of the guy's concern?

Last I heard is that he is deciding on a PWO + NLI with Auburn or a scholarship with Ole Miss.  Not sure if there has been an update since hearing that or when his timetable might be for a decision.

Would be great to sign him.  Let him have a RS year and then replace McPherson after going pro a year early due to total domination in the position. We are Kicker U!!!

I think you figure out a way to get him onboard.  If it is a scholarship, then so be it.  How many players do we have on scholarship that will never sniff the playing field.  I know you have to have those type guys for scout team ect.... but if for some reason AM were to get hurt or could not go, you want someone who can step in and fill in.

Give this guy a scholarship before he winds up beating us with a 60 yard FG.

I don't know if giving him a scholly will land him. He may have to sit 2 years if he comes to AU. The Rebs need him sooner than we do.

Yep, and I think Auburn REALLY wants to get Rob Bironas’s kid London in next years class

Auburn continues strong kicker tradition with commitment of nation's No. 3 kicker Towns McGough

McGough is from Auburn High and just recently transitioned from soccer to football.

Dating back over a decade to Cody Parkey, Auburn has turned into KickerU. That looks set to continue after Towns McGough, the nation's No. 3 kicker in the Kohl's Kicking Camp rankings, has committed to Auburn.

From Auburn High (Ala.), McGough was also heavily considering Ole Miss. The Rebels had offered McGough the chance to join on scholarship, while the Tigers add McGough as a preferred walk-on who's expected to receive an NIL deal that will compensate for not being on scholarship.

Growing up playing soccer, McGough just recently transitioned to kicking footballs instead of soccer balls and is in his second year of football. As a senior, McGough was named a MaxPreps All-American and named to the Under Armour All-American Game. He also played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, but injured his kicking leg in practice and had to kick with his non-dominant foot in warmups and in the game.

As a senior, McGough hit 19 of his 22 field goal attempts and did not miss inside 56 yards. He connected on kicks from 50 yards twice, 52 yards, 55 yards, 56 yards and 60 yards out. McGough averaged 73 yards on his kickoffs.

Alex McPherson heads into his redshirt sophomore season in 2024, but could opt to declare for the NFL Draft after that. Auburn has sent its past three kickers to the NFL in Anders Carlson, Daniel Carlson and Parkey.

Special teams coordinator Tanner Burns will hope McPherson continues that streak and McGough follows suit.

The whole NIL/scholarship thing is a little more complicated. It's definitely do-able, but it takes a substantial NIL package to match.

So, according to the latest info from the University, tuition/fees for in-state students is $6,268 per semester (including the summer term). Generally football players attend all three semesters. You would need an NIL package of just under $19k + the tax bill on that income. Then, if you're really replicating the value of a scholarship, scholarship players still receive cost of attendance stipends directly from the University. For Auburn, that value is approximately $11,300 per semester (for housing, food, and miscellaneous costs as set by the University). So that's another $22k+ (again, you'd need to add taxes to match the value).

The NIL rate for a scholarship player fluctuates by position. For positions with lower demand, I've generally $3-4k per month. So that's $35-50k for the year.

In other words, if you're turning a scholarship guy into a PWO but trying to give him dollar-for-dollar equivalence, you'd need to start that guy at around $110k in NIL funds to offset the tax implications. That would be difficult to do on a broad scale.
