Commit and target tracker

By Keith Niebuhr

Here’s a look back at Week 3.

***

-2019 Auburn receiver commit George Pickens, Hoover (Ala.): In a 42-14 loss to Washgington (D.C.) St. John’s, the 4-star recruit had seven catches for 119 yards. He now has 15 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns after two games.

-2020 quarterback Robby Ashford, Hoover (Ala.): In a 42-14 loss to Washgington (D.C.) St. John’s, the 4-star signal caller was 11-for-22 for 158 yards and two interceptions.

-2019 Auburn quarterback commit Bo Nix, Pinson Valley (Ala.): Pinson Valley beat Birmingham (Ala.) Ramsay 41-12 in a rainstorm. Nix completed 10 of 22 passes for 76 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He’s now 30 of 60 for 281 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on the season.

-2019 Auburn receiver commit Ja'Varrius Johnson, Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.): In a 38-30 win over West Forsyth (Ga.), Johnson had five catches for 98 yards and two scores — and added a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He already has 16 catches for 251 yards after two games.

-2020 running back Roydell Williams, Hueytown (Ala.): In a 28-7 win over Helena (Ala.), the 4-star back rushed for 222 yards and two scores on 21 carries. He also caught four passes for 55 yards, per Al.com.

-2019 RB target Steele Chambers, Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity: In a 43-14 win over Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy, the Ohio State commit carried the ball 18 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns. He has 33 rushes for 269 yards after three games.

-2019 RB target Tahj Gary, Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy: In a 43-14 loss to Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity, Gary scored on a 69-yard run.

-2019 Auburn tight end commit Luke Deal, Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald: Deal did not have any catches in a 52-17 loss to Abbeville (S.C.). His team completed only one pass.

-2019 WR target Jadon Haselwood, Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove: In a 45-0 win over Decatur (Ga.) Columbia, Haselwood had six receptions for 90 yards. After three games, he has 14 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns, along with seven tackles and three solo stops.

-2020 Auburn WR commit Kobe Hudson, LaGrange (Ga.) Troup County: In a 42-17 win over Columbus (Ga.), Hudson had a big night. Per the LaGrange (Ga.) Daily News, he completed “8-of-14 passes for 196 yards with a pair of touchdowns, and he also ran for 45 yards on four attempts with two scores.”

-2019 Auburn DE/DT commit Jaren Handy, Hattiesburg (Miss.): In a 48-13 win over Moss Point (Miss.), Handy recorded three total tackles — two for loss. He has six tackles for loss this season through three games.

-2019 safety target Kenny Logan, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 62-28 win over St. Augustine (Fla.), Logan rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball 22 times.

-2019 running back target Tye Edwards, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 62-28 win over St. Augustine (Fla.), Edwards rushed for 158 yards on 21 attempts. He scored five touchdowns.

***INJURED***

-2019 Auburn tight end commit Tyler Fromm, Warner Robins (Ga.): Shoulder injury. Should return soon.

-2019 Auburn cornerback commit Jaylin Simpson, St. Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy: Foot injury. Expected to return in three to four weeks.

Every Auburn commit sans Colby Wooden was in action this weekend. It was a huge weekend for Auburn’s wide receiver commits while the Tigers’ newest DB commit impressed as well. A few more Ws in the columns this week too for these future Tigers.

I will do my best to update this post with any stats or highlights I see come out in the next day or so.

Auburn Commits

  • 5* LB Owen Pappoe (Grayson, 1-0) - After dealing with a week of negative press following some drama around an alleged practice walkout last week, you could tell this Grayson squad was ready to prove to everybody that they are far from “soft”. The Rams destroyed the Tucker Tiger 48-7 on national television Saturday. Pappoe had a 1 yard rushing touchdown to go along with a strong showing from his linebacker position. He helped Grayson hold Tucker to just 58 yards. He’s gonna be a lot of fun to watch in an Auburn uniform next season.

Next Week: Bergen Catholic (0-0)

  • 4* WR George Pickens (Hoover, 1-0) - Hoover was absolutely dominant Saturday against the 2017 Alabama 6A state champs. No one was more dominant than George Pickens. Auburn’s stud wide receiver showed why ESPN continuously referring to him as the “13th ranked WR” is comical catching 8 passes for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns( one for 33 yards and another for 28 yards) on the way to a 52-14 beatdown of the Indians. He flashed all the traits that make him special: great size, quickness, freak athleticism, strength and attitude. Despite what ESPN announcers might have implied during the game, Pickens is still solidly committed to Auburn. He told AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr his commitment to the Tigers is “really strong”. He will no doubt use all of his official visits but I still see him signing with the Tigers in February. Next week, the Bucs take on power house program out of Washington DC in St. John’s.

Next Week: St. Johns (1-0)

  • 4* QB Bo Nix (Pinson Valley, 0-1) - On the other sideline, life was not so much fun for Auburn’s quarterback of the future. It became clear quickly that his group, while very talented, are nowhere near the same level across the board as the Hoover Bucs. In their defense, not many programs in the country are. Nix struggled out the gate, opening 0-5 but settled in after that and had a strong performance finishing 20-38 for 205 yards and a touchdown. Drops made his stat line look a lot worse than his actual performance but what really jumped out from this game was his maturity. Despite a bad start, drops from teammates and the general fact that his team stood no chance, Nix kept competing. His body language never changed and he even lead a late touchdown drive in the 3rd quarter. Pretty soon he will get the pleasure of tossing the ball to George Pickens which can do wonders for your stat line, just ask Robby Ashford (who was tremendous in his own right).

Next Week: Ramsey (1-0)

  • 4* CB Zion Puckett (Spalding, 1-1) - Down 26-8 at halftime against #4 ranked Carver in 5A in the state of Georgia, the Jaguars put together an incredible comeback ending in a 36-33 victory. Puckett did a little of everything including two carries for ten yards, two receptions for 17 yards, five tackles and two long kick returns. Check out his highlights below.

Next Week: Oconee County (1-1)

  • 4* DL Jaren Handy (Hattiesburg, 2-0) - In the 97th edition of the “Little Brown Jug” game, Handy’s Hattiesburg team defeated Laurel 41-20. The Tigers’ defense was a big reason thanks in large part to Jaren Handy. Handy had 7 tackles, three going for a loss and forced a fumble. Through two games it’s pretty easy to see why the big man was one of Rodney Garner’s top targets in the 2019 class.

Next Week: Moss Point (1-1)

  • 4* OG Keiondre Jones (Callaway, 1-0) - Give the Opelika Bulldogs credit, they had the Cavaliers on the ropes for much of the game but a strong 2nd half surge was too much for them to withstand. Jones and his Callaway squad secured a well fought 35-21 victory. Jones helped pave the way for stud 2020 ATH and Auburn target 4* Tank Bigsby to rush for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jones had seven pancake blocks

Next Week: LaGrange (0-1)

  • 4* ATH Jashawn Sheffield (Frederica Academy, 0-2) - It’s been a frustrating start for Frederica Academy. This week, Sheffield’s squad fell 7-6 in OT against Valwood, the same program that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. Shaffield, however, had a much stronger performance this week including a nice punt return. Sheffield had 8 solo tackles, six carries for 70 yards and five catches for 75 yards.

Next Week: Lanier County (0-2)

  • 4* DB Cam’Ron Kelly (Oscar Smith, 1-0) - Auburn’s newest commit does it all for his Oscar Smith team but his biggest impact is on the offensive side of the ball at quarterback. Kelly totaled 186 total yards off offense and found the endzone twice in an impressive 41-26 victory over West Forsyth. On the other side of the ball, the Titans didn’t even attempt a pass to Kelly’s side of the field. Here’s Kelly’s thoughts after the big win.

Next Week: BYE

  • 4* CB Jaylin Simpson (Frederica Academy, 0-2) - To compound things for the Knights, Simpson suffered a foot injury that could keep him sidelined for a few weeks according to AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr. Hopefully the young man can bounce back quickly. Before he left the game Simpson snagged an interception and forced a fumble.

Next Week: Lanier County (0-2)

  • 4* TE Tyler Fromm (Warner Robins, 2-0) - Tyler Fromm is still out with an injury but his brother and Mercer Bears QB commit Dylan Fromm continues to shred defenses. Warner Robins won a wild shootout over Locust Grove 50-40 with Dylan Fromm tossing four touchdown passes. Should be a lot of fun to see the brothers play together once Tyler can get back on the field. It’s clear this Warner Robins squad can put up some points in a hurry.

Next Week: Baldwin (0-2)

  • 3* OT Justin Osborne (IMG, 1-0) - It was a much better week for IMG Academy as they traveled to Pennsylvania to take on the defending state champs Pine-Richland and left with a 42-0 victory in a game that saw the mercy rule invoked in the third quarter. Because last week’s loss was in a scrimmage, IMG’s 38 game win streak remains in tact. Haven’t been able to find anything on how Justin Osborne performed.

Next Week: Norland (0-1)

  • 3* TE Luke Deal (Emerald, 0-2) - It was another rough day for the Vikings as they fell to T.L. Hanna 47-7. The bit of good news is the one Emerald scoring drive occurred when Luke Deal took over as Wildcat QB and powered his way through the Hanna defense. You can see Auburn’s talented tight end in action below. He’s got a great chance of stepping into Chandler Cox’s 3-back spot next season.

Next Week: Abbeville (0-2)

  • 3* DE Colby Wooden (Archer, 0-1) - No game this week for the Archer Tigers. Wooden’s squad will try and bounce back from a tough opening season loss next week against Spartanburg out of South Carolina.

Next Week: Spartanburg (1-1)

  • 3* DL Jamond Gordon (Meridian, 1-1) - Meridian took down the Davidson Warriors out of Mobile, AL 21-13 to get their first W of the season.  Was part of a defensive effort that contained Davidson's starting running back to 37 yards and its quarterback to 6 of 24 passing for 65 yards and a touchdown in a 21-13 win for Meridian. The Wildcats face a very stiff test next week against the Central Red Devils. Keep an eye on Red Devils 2020 WR EJ Williams. He’s a top Auburn target that was close to committing before Clemson, Georgia and a slew of others jumped into the race.

Next Week: Central (1-0)

  • 3* WR Ja’Varrius Johnson (Hewitt-Trussville, 1-0) - In a game featuring a ridiculous amount of Alabama commits (as the announcers kept reminding viewers) and the nation’s #1 ranked wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, the diminutive Ja’Varrius Johnson looked like he belonged. In fact, as the game went on Haselwood started covering Johnson as often as big time Alabama commit 2020 4* WR Dazalin Worsham. Johnson lead all receivers in the game with 13 catches for 169 yards. But it wasn’t enough as Cedar Grove pulled the upset 34-30.

Next Week: Cedar Grove (1-0)

  • 3* C Jakai Clark (Grayson, 1-0) - Clark and his fellow big uglies up front helped pave the way for the Rams’ 255 rushing yards on the ground in victory over Tucker. Clark recorded numerous pancake blocks and team sources tell us he had one of the best games of his career.

Next Week: Bergen Catholic (0-0)

  • 2020 4* WR Kobe Hudson (Troup County, 1-0) - Troup County went on the road and whooped up on the Ridgeland Panthers 32-0 Friday night. Hudson is the Tigers QB this year and he has a strong showing accounting for three touchdowns on the evening including a 60 yard TD scamper. He had 191 yards passing and two touchdowns. You can check out a general recap of the game below with a few of Hudson’s highlights.

Next Week: Columbus (1-0)

  • 2020 4* DL Andy Boykin (Troup County, 1-0) - Boykin was a key piece of Troup County’s impressive defensive performance. Auburn continues to battle Georgia to hang onto the elite defensive line commit.

Next Week: Columbus (1-0)

  • 2020 4* LB Demouy Kennedy (Theodore, 0-1) - It ain’t easy to win in Daphne as Kennedy’s Bobcat squad found the hard way in a 16-13 loss to the Trojans. Kennedy had a strong debut though as seen in highlights below. Kennedy had four tackles, a tackle-for-loss and a pass breakup. Travis Williams is going to continue to have a lot of talent to work with at linebacker.

Next Week: Baker

  • 2020 4* Buck Quandarrius Robinson (Jackson-Olin) - The Mustangs opened the year with a bang knocking off Fairfield 24-14. Robinson helped this talented Jackson-Olin defense hold Fairfield’s offense to only 106 yards total on the day.  Robinson had a fumble recovery, two sacks, a tackle-for-loss and eight quarterback pressures.

Next Week: Fairfield

  • 2020 3* DT Damarjhe Lewis (Griffin, 1-1) - Griffin fell to 2019 Alabama 4* DT DJ Dale’s Clay-Chalkville team 35-20. Lewis was once again a disruptive force in the interior. Lewis had three tackles for loss.
  • Next Week: Newnan (1-1)

-2019 WR target Jadon Haselwood, Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove: In a 34-30 win over Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.), Haselwood caught 3 passes for 73 yards with a 44-yard touchdown, was among his team’s leading tacklers, returned punts and kickoffs and only left the field for about 10 plays.

-2019 RB target Tahj Gary, Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy: In a 58-27 win over Atlanta (Ga.) Grady, Gary “scored on runs of 54 and 1 yard and caught a 23-yard touchdown pass,” per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He finished with 92 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

-2019 RB target Steele Chambers, Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity: In a 35-6 win over Cumming (Ga.) South Forsyth, Chambers, an Ohio State commit, had 27 yards and a touchdown on four carries — and passed for two touchdowns.

-2019 RB target Tye Edwards, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 42-7 win over Middleburg (Fla.), Edwards rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

-2019 S/ATH target Kenny Logan, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 42-7 win over Middleburg (Fla.), Longan scored four touchdowns. The St. Augustine Record reports Logan “finished with 208 total yards, including 128 rushing yard on 10 carries. He also caught an 80-yard touchdown pass.”

Commit and target tracker

By Keith Niebuhr

Each week during football season, Auburn Undercover will share notable stats from Auburn commits and targets from the previous week’s games.

Here’s a look back at Week 1 … it’s worth noting, several teams don’t open until this week.

***

-2019 Auburn DE/DT commit Jaren Handy, Hattiesburg (Miss.): In a 35-26 win over Petal (Miss.), Handy recorded five total tackles — three for loss. He added a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

-2019 Auburn CB commit Zion Puckett, Griffin (Ga) Spalding: Puckett recorded 4.5 tackles and two catches for 40 yards in a 19-13 loss to Griffin (Ga.). He played safety on defense and often was asked to cover slot and outside receivers.

-2019 Auburn TE commit Luke Deal, Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald: Deal had an 8-yard touchdown reception in a loss to Ninety Six (S.C.).

-2019 WR target Jadon Haselwood, Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove: In a 21-7 win over Summerville (S.C.), Haswelwood, a 5-star Georgia commit, had a spectacular 33-yard touchdowns reception, but it was called back by a hold. (I will post the play in the comments section). Haselwood also returned a punt 55 yards and scored on a short reception. Haselwood finished with five catches for 80 yards and a score with five tackles and a caused fumble on defense.

-2019 RB target Tahj Gary, Atlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy: In a 56-31 loss to Atlanta (Ga.) Westminster, Gary carried three times for 74 yards and a touchdown and added two catches for 61 yards.

-2019 RB target Steele Chambers, Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity: In a 35-21 win over Atlanta (Ga.) St. Pius, Chambers, an Ohio State commit, ran for a score, passed for a score and added a touchdown reception.

-2019 S/ATH target Kenny Logan, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 50-10 preseason scrimmage win over Creekside (Fla.), Logan had 160 yards of offense with two touchdowns on offense and recorded eight tackles.

-2019 RB target Tye Edwards, St. Augustine (Fla.) Menendez: In a 50-10 preseason scrimmage win over Creekside (Fla.), Edwards rushed for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He opened the game with a 78-yard rushing touchdown.

-2020 Auburn DT commit Damarjhe Lewis, Griffin (Ga.): In a 19-13 win over Spalding (Ga.), Lewis was in the backfield much of the game. He recorded eight tackles, four for loss.

-2021 QB target Brock Vandagriff, Bogart (Ga.) Prince Avenue Christian: Vandagriff went 17 of 29 for 260 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-27 win over Mount Vernon (Ga.). He added 96 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.

I think a lot of people are sleeping on him as a RB. I'd take him over most of our other RB targets. He reminds me a lot of Eddie George.

Can someone remind me what happened there? Is he the one that we're looking at as a linebacker? Are we slow playing him in favor of Cain?

Yes, we want him at LB.  Cain is #1 on their board and I'm not sure Tye is even on it.

Well, I drafted 2 Auburn RBs in my fantasy draft last night and somebody else took a 3rd, so I'll just keep telling myself they know what they're doing...

Thank the Lord for Keith. I was just thinking that it was time for high school stats to roll in for week one but I didn't want to hunt them down.

Interesting that he got himself a rushing touchdown! Good going Handy, glad to see the TFLs.

"Slot and outside receivers" well...those would be the two types of receivers to cover. If he's averaging 20 YPC then get him the ball more!

Corey Grant baby! He's going to be featured a lot more than last season and if Fournette goes down, he's RB2 at worst. They are also going to try to get him more involved in the passing game.

(He was my last pick of the draft.)

I believe we should have a lot more stats coming in after today and tomorrow (noticed a lot of the Alabama and Georgia teams are playing on a Saturday???)

Been in a 4 keeper league with my high school buddies for 5 years and I love talking Fantasy (even had a radio show about it). Agree on Corey Grant but he just slipped my mind completely!

Actually the norm the 1st week or 2 of the season every year.

The stats above are from last week. There will be a lot more stats after this week since the season fully starts in Alabama & Georgia this week. Now whether we will have all those stats remains to be seen. Keith usually makes those as VIP articles.

My last pick was Cody Parkey!   A kicker in the Windy City isn’t a great idea, but it’s Cody, so I had to.

Also, I named my team “Parkey my Newton Car” after my K and QB (both AU men)!

I tried tbe college fantasy draft couple nights ago. I got lost with all the unfamiliar names extremely fast. I picked up the UCF QB and a couple others before I let autodraft finish for me. I’m not as branched out of a CFB fan as I thought I was. ☹️
